Maher blames the left for George Santos: ‘What do liberals love? Identity politics and victimhood’

For those Democrats frustrated with freshman Rep. George Santos’ (R-NY) record regarding his own background, comedian Bill Maher was far from coddling as he foisted as much blame on them for the congressman’s election during the aptly titled segment, “Owning the Fibs.”

As his guests, political commentator Andrew Sullivan and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), laughed their heads off, the “Real Time” host recapped the laundry list of claims Santos had made about his record leading up to his victory in New York’s Congressional District 3. While many have called for Santos to resign over his misleading resume, Maher turned his focus to highlighting what the end result said of the current political landscape.

“George Santos is the first politician to realize that since we are all in our media bubbles, you can pretend to be everything to voters in both parties, and no one on either side will notice,” the comedian noted.

Following the 2020 Census, district lines had been redrawn to include portions of eastern Queens and northern Nassau County, but the race for the open seat left by incumbent Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), who had launched a gubernatorial bid, was still expected to be close having gone in then-candidate Joe Biden’s favor by roughly eight points over then-President Donald Trump in the last presidential election. Santos’ margin was similar over his Democrat opponent Robert Zimmerman, also an openly gay politician.

“The giveaway here is that Santos’ district is Long Island, New York, suburb of Manhattan, not as liberal, but almost always went Democratic. Biden won it by eight points, so how did a Trump-loving, election-denying, white nationalist get elected in a Democrat-leaning district?” Maher asked. “Simple. He told them what they wanted to hear too.”

“What do liberals love? Identity politics and victimhood, so he said he had a brain tumor and he was one of the first New Yorkers hospitalized for COVID. He said he lost four coworkers in the famous Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016,” the host continued. “He’s from Brazil, which is overwhelmingly Catholic, but when he ran in New York, he said he was Jewish and in fact, his grandparents fled Ukraine to escape the Nazis. That’s right, his Jewish, Ukrainian forefathers escaped the Holocaust by being born Catholic in Brazil.”

“Nobody cares anymore about substance. It’s all tribalism. The only thing that matters is: is he on our team? Is he doing our schtick?” the comedian went on as he pointed out Santos was employing both sides’ schtick.

“Republicans love a winner and Democrats love someone whose life story makes you want to kill yourself,” he declared.

“What matters is that he’s a brave, sad, proudly gay, half black, Latino, Holocaust victim,” Maher said with a long pause before adding, “with a brain tumor.”
