‘Let’s all pray for a miracle’: Search for actor Julian Sands resumes one week after he vanished during hike

Authorities have resumed an air search via helicopter only for British actor Julian Sands, who went missing on Friday the 13th, while hiking in the treacherous Baldy Bowl area of California’s San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles.

“The search for Julian Sands continues via helicopter only,” according to an update from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office. “Evidence of avalanches was observed earlier in the week on the west side of the slopes and ground search and rescue efforts continue to be held back.”

“Additional air searches will be conducted,” the authorities said, “however, there is no set time or duration for the searches.”

Police noted that phone pings were detected on Jan. 15 and “showed Sands to be heading to the Mount Baldy area.”

“Additional phone pings from the cell provider were attempted but were unsuccessful, due to the lack of cell service and most likely cell phone power failure,” they stated. “A delayed ping through Sands’ Apple iPhone operating system, from January 14, 2023, provided a possible location on one of the trails leading to the summit of Mount Baldy. This area was checked by ground searchers and by helicopter. Ground and air searchers were unable to locate any evidence in this area that would assist in locating Mr. Sands.”

In the update, authorities clarified the earlier statement, saying, “The pings from January 14th and 15th were delayed and showed Sands’ movement on January 13th.”

Sands, 65, an avid fan of hiking and mountain climbing, was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area of Mt. Baldy at about 7:30 p.m. on January 13.

His snow-covered car was recovered, but there has been no sign of the star.

For weeks, the Golden State has been pummeled by storm after storm.

On January 14, President Joe Biden “declared that a major disaster exists in the State of California,” the White House stated.

San Bernardino County sheriffs stated conditions on Mount Baldy were  “extremely dangerous,” with Fox 11 saying hiking is dangerous “even for the most experienced hikers.”

The local news outlet reported that, in addition to Sands, another hiker went missing on Monday in the Crytal Lake area of the San Gabriel Mountains.

In just the last four weeks, the reporter said, “search and rescue teams have responded to 14 rescue missions in the Mount Baldy area for lost, stranded, or injured hikers.”

One trapped hiker said, “I slid down the mountain about 20 to 30 feet.”

“There has been no new update or witness information about his whereabouts since then,” Gloria Huerta, Public Information Officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told the BBC on Friday. “The air search is being resumed, but we have not been able to resume a ground search yet due to icy conditions and a threat of avalanches.”

Meanwhile, online, prayers for Sands, who starred in such films as “A Room with a View,” “Warlock,” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and appeared in such popular television shows as “Stargate SG-1” and “Blacklist,” continue to pour in.

“Julian Sands is a wonderful man, husband, father, and friend to so so many. A gentle, kind soul,” tweeted fellow actor Matthew Modine. “Keep candles burning for his safe return from the mountain he loves. ”

“I knew Julian Sands a bit back in the 80s when his brother shared a mouse-infested flat with my best friend,” said Church of England clergyman Richard Coles. “He was so dazzling and so delightful and everyone who loves him is beside themselves with worry. I’m praying for his safe return.”

“Hope and thoughts going out to the family of my dear friend and wonderful actor, Julian Sands, who is missing on Mt. Baldy,” wrote film producer Frank Marshall. “Let’s all pray for a miracle.”
