Gutfeld defends ‘heartless’ reactions to homeless: Maybe they’re tired of finding ‘human s**t’ at their doors

Ignoring the homeless crisis has led some urban dwellers to come up with their own, sometimes “heartless,” solutions and Fox News host Greg Gutfeld expressed sympathy, if not support, over a particular viral interaction when he suggested the guy could’ve been done with seeing “human sh*t on his front door.”

During a Monday segment on “The Five,” the panel was discussing a recent op-ed proposal from NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton who himself had had enough with the condition of his hometown of San Diego because of the homeless population. The basketball player suggested the government step in to fund a tent city and relocate the homeless elsewhere, a notion that Gutfeld emphatically agreed with.

“I would support this, it’s what I have been talking about for a while, an autonomous zone for people who wish to be homeless,” he expressed. “This is where you can go and practice this experimental lifestyle. And if you are back in the city panhandling, we’ll take you back there. Or we’ll get you help. But you are going to go back to that place because that’s where it is legal.”

In response, co-host Geraldo Rivera wanted to see what other treatment of homeless people Gutfeld was comfortable with and asked, “What do you think of that lady squirting the hose on the homeless lady?”

Rivera’s reference seemed to be specifically about San Francisco gallery owner Collier Gwin who had been filmed spraying a homeless woman in the face with his water hose while cleaning the sidewalk in front of his business on a reportedly 49-degree day.

“I said you have to move, I cannot clean the street; move down,” Gwin later recounted.

After correcting Rivera that the incident involved a man, Gutfeld said, “I think everybody is at the edge of their frustration. You can say, ‘My gosh, that’s heartless.’ Well, maybe that person gets up every day and sees human sh*t on his front door.”

Slamming the desk as he spoke, the Fox News personality looked as though he had caught himself before saying the expletive that begins with “F.”

Gutfeld’s argument seemed to be precisely the point that Walton had made in his op-ed in the Times of San Diego co-authored by Sunbreak Ranch chairman George Mullen.

“Most of us can no longer walk or bicycle our downtown city streets, sidewalks, and parks without facing an obstacle course of tents, bodies, human excrement, needles, trash, and a slew of walking-zombies who are impossible to distinguish between those just down on their luck and others who are out-of-control substance abusers about to attack us,” the opinion piece read.

Of note, Mullen’s ranch was the proposed site for the government to lease land at the price of $1 annually to conduct this “experiment” in alternative lifestyles away from interfering with city dwellers. They argued, “The successful implementation of Sunbreak Ranch will save hundreds of thousands of lives, alleviate widespread suffering, unlock unfathomable human potential, and clean up America’s cities for all of us.”

Were it to prove successful, the proposal suggested the implementation of the same process outside every major city in the country.
