Legendary actor and comic Eddie Murphy knocked it out of the park at Tuesday’s Golden Globe Awards, delivering a perfectly timed jab at fellow Hollywood icon Will Smith, mocking him for his now-infamous loss of control when he leapt from the audience to slap Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars, a joke that wasn’t only a crowd pleaser for the audience in attendance but also with viewers who flooded social media with their reactions,
As the celebrity-laden awards show returned to television for its 80th edition after it was canceled last year over a controversy about a lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which presents the event, the usual self-aggrandizing political speeches by the beautiful people reminded many that they really didn’t miss anything when NBC refused to air the sanctimonious “snoozefest” in 2022, with Murphy’s acceptance speech being the highlight of an otherwise “boring” night.
The 61-year-old Murphy, who in the 1980s was a box office superstar with a string of smash hits, was honored with the coveted Cecil B DeMille award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” taking to the podium at the Beverly Hilton to accept the prestigious award and to dispense with his three “simple” tips for a successful Hollywood career.
“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. It’s a blueprint, and I’ve followed it my whole career,” he said.
“It’s very simple, there’s three things, you just do these three things, pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f**king mouth,” said Murphy, punctuating his joke with a trademark F-bomb as the crowd in the seats erupted with laughter.
Eddie Murphy shares three pieces of advice for up-and-comers in the industry:
1) Pay your taxes.
2) Mind your business.
3) Keep Will Smith's wife's name out your f—ing mouth.https://t.co/YDe7QBg9R9 pic.twitter.com/1iH3iHGBiz— Variety (@Variety) January 11, 2023
Murphy was of course referring to Smith’s embarrassing meltdown when Rock enjoyed a bit of mirth at the expense of his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, prompting the Best Actor winner to bolt from the seats to deliver the slap heard around the world.

Murphy’s epic jab at Smith brought the house down on Twitter as users gave the comedy legend a resounding two thumbs up.

Literally EVER. And leave it to Eddie Murphy to pick the best moment for a Will Smith "slap" joke. He is the only comedian who has nailed it. #GoldenGlobes https://t.co/szlSRzRCa4

Unfortunately for the Golden Globes itself, Twitter users also posted their reviews, with the virtue signaling and political grandstanding being a complete turnoff for many and others finding the show to be a complete bore.
A friend of mine played this drinking game during the #goldenglobes where you take a shot every time someone mentions climate change, racism, Ukraine, or LGBTXYZ.

I know no one is probably watching the Golden Globes or could care less, but this was one of the most boring opening monologues in the history of Golden Globes! It was all downhill after Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) stopped hosting the show! #GoldenGlobes2023

Award shows have bronze unwatchable. They were never great but they’ve become insipid and boring. The @goldenglobes were positively coma-inducing

While his post-1980s career never matched the heights of the days of “48 Hrs.,” “Trading Places,” “Beverly Hills Cop,” and “Coming to America,” Murphy has nonetheless been an enduring fan favorite and this turn at the Golden Globes shows that he hasn’t lost his comedic touch.
Other recent winners of the prestigious Cecil B DeMille Award include Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges, Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington who joined a long line of honorees including some of the greatest names in Hollywood history including Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and John Wayne.
