Already ‘woke’ M&M’s reveals ‘all-female’ packaging to promote diversity, inclusivity

In yet another example that Corporate America will never be “woke” enough, one of the nation’s most popular candies is getting an overhaul for the times as M&M’s rolls out its new purple character as a part of the celebration of diversity, the unofficial religion of the political left.

The new “all female” packages are a part of the company’s “Flip The Status Quo” promotion, again demonstrating that the line between Democratic Party objectives and free enterprise has increasingly become a thin one with a new generation of activist business leaders rising to the fore in corporate boardrooms and human resource departments.

“We’re celebrating women who are flipping the status quo, transforming the world around them to make it a more colorful and welcoming place for all,” the brand’s website reads. “Now, we need your help to shine a spotlight on all women who are breaking barriers, setting new standards and paving new paths for others to follow.”

Prominently featured will be the new Purple character, the newest addition to the brand’s animated dancing candies which M&M’s parent company Mars officially rolled out last fall.

“For the first time in a decade, M&M’S®, proudly part of Mars, is expanding its iconic crew with the introduction of a new character and spokescandy – meet Purple,” Mars said in a September 2022 press release. “Designed to represent acceptance and inclusivity, our newest member is known for her earnest self-expression. Keen self-awareness, authenticity and confidence are the driving forces behind Purple’s charm and quirky nature. She joins the legendary cast of M&M’S characters, who recently were given a refresh with updated looks and more nuanced personalities in January.”

“Mars is thrilled to debut the newest member of the M&M’S cast of characters to the world. There is so much about our new spokescandy that people can relate to and appreciate, including her willingness to embrace her true self. Our new character reminds us to celebrate what makes us unique,” Mars Wrigley Global Vice President Jane Hwang said. “Our purpose story is just getting started and the introduction of our newest M&M’S spokescandy is the next chapter, as the brand continues to delight fans with fun in a way only M&M’S can.”

Joining Purple on the special packages – which will only include three colors – are Green and Brown which the company previously suggested are involved in a lesbian relationship.

“It’s rare Ms. Brown and I get to spend time together without some colorful characters barging in. – Ms. Green,” the brand posted in a 2015 tweet of the two colors sitting on a beach bench and holding hands with the sea in the background.

“Women all over the world are flipping how they define success and happiness while challenging the status quo, so we’re thrilled to be able to recognize and celebrate them,” said Mars Wrigley North America chief marketing officer Gabrielle Wesley. “And who better to help us on that mission than our own powerhouse spokescandies Green, Brown and Purple?”

The company announced that it planned to donate $1 for every one of the special packages purchased – up to $500,000 – to the nonprofit organizations “She Is The Music” and “We Are Moving the Needle.”

The company also said on its website that further donations would be made to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the Female Founder Collective.
