Nearly a decade after abandoning the United States to join ISIS, Hoda Muthana sang a new tune about what brought her there as she lamented in a recent interview, “One of the worst feelings I ever had was someone telling me I wasn’t an American citizen.”
In 2014, at the age of 20, Muthana left Alabama where she was raised to renounce her citizenship and marry the first of three ISIS fighters. Now, 28 and a single mother of one child living in a Syrian detention camp after the collapse of the Islamic State under former President Donald Trump, the woman who reportedly called for others to attack Americans and “spill all of their blood” considers herself a victim.
Speaking with Lucy Marley of The News Movement from the northern Syria U.S.-allied Kurdish forces Roj detention camp, Muthana contended, “Of course I regret coming here,” and, “If I could take it back I would do it in a heartbeat.”
The ISIS bride was born in New Jersey to Yemeni immigrants and after she fled the country, former President Barack Obama’s administration canceled her American passport and her citizenship based on the fact that her father was an accredited Yemeni diplomat when she was born.
Since 2019, she has remained in Roj lamenting that the people she had met online who convinced her to join up with ISIS were “traffickers,” she was “vulnerable” and “I’m hoping my government looks at me as someone young at the time and naive.”
During Trump’s administration, Muthana was once again denied reentry into the United States and, as previously reported, the contents of tweets that had been accredited to her included terroristic threats.
In one that had been deleted, she wrote, “Americans wake up! Men and women altogether. You have much to do while you live under our greatest enemy, enough of your sleeping! Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriot, Memorial etc Day parades..go on drive by’s + spill all of their blood or rent a big truck n drive all over them. Kill them.”

However, Muthana argued that those tweets were not hers and that her trafficker’s wife took the phones of all the women in the group she had come over with and said, “because we’ve always thought about going back to our countries that we need to make ourselves look bad in the media so we don’t have this persuasion to go back.”
“I never had a platform to say this, but I have always been trying to tell people that those tweets were not mine,” she said. “It either gets cut out of the media or it gets kind of butchered somehow and I never get a platform.”
“If I need to sit in prison, and do my time, I will do it…I won’t fight against it,” she told The News Movement. Last year the Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal and she further lamented, “One of the worst feelings I ever had was someone telling me I wasn’t an American citizen.”
“Even here, right now, I can’t fully say everything I want to say,” she went on. “But once I do leave, I will. I will be an advocate against this. I wish I can help the victims of ISIS in the West understand that someone like me is not part of it, that I as well am a victim of ISIS.”
As before, reactions showed little sympathy for the woman who renounced her citizenship to join up with the terrorist organization.
