Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will be doing himself no favors this week when he makes a rare joint appearance with President Joe Biden in his home state of Kentucky.
Then again, McConnell appears to have thrown caution to the wind when it comes to being concerned about agitating the Republican Party base — just before the Christmas break McConnell declared that former President Donald Trump’s “political clout has diminished,” and said the GOP “lost support that we needed among independents and moderate Republicans, primarily related to the view they had of us as a party — largely made by the former president — that we were sort of nasty and tended toward chaos.”
On Wednesday, the “Old Crow,” as Trump often refers to McConnell, will join President Joe Biden, a fellow octogenarian, to tout the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill approved in 2021 thanks in large part to McConnell and other moderate Republicans in the Senate — 40-year high inflation be damned.
Republican Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio will also appear with Biden on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press, joining with McConnell in delivering Biden an early gift in 2023, that being a stage to present himself as a bipartisan president. Never mind that he spent much of 2022 demonizing Republican voters, even calling them a “threat to this nation.”
CNN got an early start on the Biden reelection sell with this headline Sunday: “Biden will promote bipartisanship as he returns to a changed Washington.”
“President Joe Biden, after returning this week to a politically reshaped Washington, will join top Republican officials to herald his infrastructure law as he seeks out bipartisan cooperation in a new era of divided government,” the Democrat-friendly network declared.
McConnell worked with Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, to secure two federal grants totaling $1.6 billion for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor construction project — the bridge links the two states over the Ohio river. McConnell said in a statement that “building a new companion bridge on the Brent Spence Bridge corridor will be one of the bill’s crowning accomplishments.”
“For decades, inadequate capacity on the aging Brent Spence Bridge has created headaches for drivers traveling between Kentucky and Ohio. Today, we’re taking a major step toward fixing the problem,” the GOP leader said last week.
