Five woke economists debating how much Calif. taxpayers will have to dole out in ‘reparations’

How much taxpayers will be forced to pay black Californians in “reparations” for the “lingering negative effects” of slavery — a practice in which the state never participated — is now being debated by five uber-woke economists, including one who wants up to $14 trillion to be doled out to African Americans nationwide.

As American Wire News previously reported, California’s Reparations Task Force issued in June a 500-page report calling for prison system reforms, a state-subsidized mortgage program, free health care, and free college tuition for those who can prove they are descendants of African Americans who lived in the United States in the 19th century.

Six months later, professors William Spriggs, Thomas Craemer, Kaycea Campbell, William A. “Sandy” Darity Jr., and his wife, lecturer Kirstin Mullen, have been tasked with putting a dollar amount to the alleged suffering of black Californians and how many of them can expect a payout, according to the Daily Mail.

In early December, the task force concluded that eligible Californians are owed a bare minimum of $223,200 in reparations each, bringing the total cost of the proposed payments to $569 billion in taxpayer money.

Spriggs is the former chair of the Economics Department at Howard University, the Daily Mail reveals, and he seems to think that basic economic principles are racist.

In 2020, as the Black Lives Matter movement held “mostly peaceful” protests across America, Spriggs told CNBC, “We ignore the constructs that our society has created. The purpose of those constructs are to create inequality.”

He also believes those who apply for unemployment benefits shouldn’t have to prove they’re actually looking for a job because that could lead to a widening of the income disparity between blacks and whites.

As the current chief economist for the AFL-CIO, Spriggs serves on the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Thomas Craemer, in 2015, added up all the hours every American slave worked, multiplied it by the average wages for the time, and declared that African Americans are owed $14 trillion in back pay.

He has since upped that figure to $20 trillion.

Darity Jr. and his wife, Kristin Mullen, co-wrote a book on reparations in which they argued that making it rain with money is the only way for American society to move on from slavery.


Together, reports the Daily Mail, “they have argued that the injustices committed against black people outweigh all of the injustices committed against other racial groups.”

This includes Native Americans, whose claims the duo insists are “irrelevant” to those made by blacks.

 

Darity’s focus is on “inequity by race; class and ethnicity stratification economics, schooling and the racial achievement gap; North-South theories of trade and development; skin shade and labor market outcomes; the economics of reparations; the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Industrial Revolution; the history of economics and the social and psychological effects of exposure to unemployment,” the Daily Mail reports.

And, according to the outlet, “Not much is known about Kaycea Williams’ views, but a lot of her work seems to be focused on economic issues in her home country of Jamaica.”

An economics professor at both Chapman University and Los Angeles Pierce University, Williams heads up a firm called Strategic Economics Analysis.

In the past, the professor has written about public corruption and its impact on economies.

The task force has until the end of June to submit its final report.
