Continuing a state of perpetual Trump Derangement Syndrome, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes had some thoughts on the state of the Republican Party and an ideology, he contended, had “collapsed in on itself.”

Closing out 2022 on MSNBC’s “All In,” Hayes was discussing the upcoming 118th Congress with his panel and the posturing for leadership within the GOP ahead of the official vote for speaker of the House. As House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) progression to power has been checked by conservative members of the caucus, naturally Hayes found a way to blame former President Donald Trump.
“I think Republicans’ ideology has collapsed in on itself, and they don’t know what they believe anymore and it makes it harder to oppose stuff,” he argued as he attempted to assign victory to President Joe Biden for “bipartisan wins” that merely exposed the depths of the swamp still overpopulated with RINOs.
“I think the kind of Paul Ryan-ism,” Hayes continued mentioning the previous Republican speaker, “…isn’t what the party wants anymore, but they don’t really know what to replace it with, and Donald Trump-ism is kind of a series of gestures and it makes it harder for them to figure out what their actual agenda is.”
Of course, Hayes’ assertion belied the fact that while there may be squabbles among factions over how to achieve the goals of the Republican Party, voters summarily agree on the platform to secure the border, strengthen the economy and reduce crime nationwide in addition to the myriad culture war issues shored up by progressive policies.
Meanwhile, former Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) echoed the host’s attempt to portray the GOP in disarray as she said, “Well, I think you’re right. There’s a lot of noise coming out of the Republican conference. But there isn’t anything that really holds them together. And these days, it’s not even a set of values that hold them together.”
She went on to suggest, “I do think it is going to make it really complicated for any speaker, whether it’s going to be Kevin McCarthy or somebody else–I predict someone else–to lead a very fractured caucus, one that you can’t pull together on any range of policy issues. Remember, Paul Ryan governed because he had policy that he believed in and that he was committed to and I just don’t really see that coming out of Kevin McCarthy and coming out of this Republican conference.”
It remains to be seen whether or not the California lawmaker will be able to secure the votes to be elected second in the line of presidential succession behind Vice President Kamala Harris, but his recent willingness to change rules stood as evidence that holdout conservative members haven’t budged to give him support.
As reported, on Friday McCarthy surprised opposing members by offering a return to a policy changed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that limited the ability to offer a motion to vacate the sitting speaker to members of House leadership. In so doing, the congressman would be opening the door to have his authority challenged at any juncture if conservative members remain unsatisfied with his performance.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who has adamantly opposed moves from establishment Republicans during the lame duck session going so far as to call for primaries against members who voted for the nearly $2 trillion omnibus bill, said of the accommodation, “While difficult in practice, it is an important mechanism to restore trust and provide accountability.”
The vote for speaker is scheduled to take place on Jan. 3.
