Concerns over antisemitism have been on the rise lately and, with Hanukkah officially underway, the New York Times’ ill-timed attempt to advise Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu on Israeli politics drew a scathing rebuke.
Taking every opportunity to demonize the results of Israel’s election by referring to Netanyahu as the leader of the “far right government” comprised of “ultrareligious and ultranationalist parties,” the Times’ editorial board took the left’s “threat to democracy” doom-saying abroad because of their own opposition to the agenda of the Knesset’s (Israel’s legislature) majority.
Netanyahu was quick to chastise the outlet Sunday for treating his government as “a significant threat” and publicly reminded them of the Times’ habit of being on the wrong side of history, tweeting, “After burying the Holocaust for years on its back pages and demonizing Israel for decades on its front pages, the New York Times now shamefully calls for undermining Israel’s elected incoming government.”

The once and future prime minister continued further and wrote, “While the NYT continues to delegitimize the one true democracy in the Middle East and America’s best ally in the region, I will continue to ignore its ill-founded advice and instead focus on building a stronger and more prosperous country, strengthening ties with America, expanding peace with our neighbors, and securing the future of the one and only Jewish state.”
Seeking to set the narrative on President Joe Biden’s relationship with our ally, the editorial board argued after asserting their own support of a two-state solution, “Mr. Netanyahu’s government, however, is a significant threat to the future of Israel — its direction, its security and even the idea of a Jewish homeland.”
“For one, the government’s posture could make it militarily and politically impossible for a two-state solution to ever emerge,” they continued. “Rather than accept this outcome, the Biden administration should do everything it can to express its support for a society governed by equal rights and the rule of law in Israel, as it does in countries all over the world. That would be an act of friendship, consistent with the deep bond between the two nations.”
At no point does the op-ed offer evidence as to how Israel’s security would be guaranteed by a two-state solution that would see the creation of an independent State of Palestine of indeterminate borders.
“America’s support for Israel reflects our two countries’ respect for democratic ideals,” the editorial board concluded, in part, as they further encourage our government to posture against the wishes of the people of Israel.
While Netanyahu was defending his nation’s sovereignty against the progressives and their continued push towards an open society, the Times was also getting reamed for the “disgusting” imagery of their Sunday crossword puzzle that undeniably resembled a Nazi swastika.
Donald Trump Jr. was among those vocally decrying the outlet when he shared a screenshot of the puzzle and wrote, “Disgusting! Only the New York Times would get Chanukah going with this [as] the crossword puzzle. Imagine what they would do to someone who did this and was not ideologically aligned with them? I’ll give them the same benefit of the doubt they would give those people… EXACTLY ZERO.”

Equally aware of the timing, conservative radio host Mark Levin showed his support for Netanyahu as he also blasted the Times writing, “On this first night of Hanukkah, Netanyahu pushes back against the Israel-hating New York Slimes.”
