When Elon Musk shows up as surprise guest at Dave Chappelle’s SF gig, crowd makes some serious ‘noise’

Twitter CEO Elon Musk made a surprise appearance on stage at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show in the leftist stronghold of San Francisco and was met with boos and cheers at the Chase Center Sunday night.

“Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world,” Chappelle announced in one video that was shared online by an account that no longer exists as of Monday morning, according to NBC News.

At first, the crowd of roughly 19,000 erupted into cheers and was then drowned out with cries of “boo!” as Musk, wearing an “I love Twitter” shirt, waved to the arena, ignoring the detractors.

“Cheers and boos, I see,” Chappelle noted as Musk shrugged to the audience. “People who are booing — and I’m just pointing out the obvious — you have terrible seats.”

“Controversy, buddy,” Chappelle said.

You weren’t expecting this, were you?” Musk asked, following the boos.

“It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience,” the comedian quipped as the audience and Musk laughed.

It’s a good bet there were former Twitter employees in the audience just as Chappelle kidded. Thousands were laid off in November and Musk was sure to have anticipated a less-than-warm welcome by the left-leaning audience.

“Dave, what should I say?” Musk asked Chappelle on stage.

“A good 80% of the stadium boos. 18k people. And he withers. Like absolutely turns into a corncob,” sci-fi writer James Ye tweeted.

“Dave gave him so many chances to speak but he just put his hands in his pockets,” Yu commented. “I actually felt bad for him. I’m by no means an Elon fanboy, more a centrist. I wanted to shake him: for the love of god man, say something and pretend it’s a tweet!!”

Musk had a different take, and since he was at the center of the reaction, his viewpoint might be a bit more on point.

“Technically, it was 90% cheers & 10% boos (except during quiet periods), but, still, that’s a lot of boos, which is a first for me in real life (frequent on Twitter). It’s almost as if I’ve offended SF’s unhinged leftists … but nahhh,” he noted on Twitter.

Chappelle must appreciate Musk’s position because he has been at the center of controversy as well. He has been continuously bashed over transgender comments in his special “The Closer.” Hundreds of LGBTQ activists and workers marched outside Netflix’s Los Angeles headquarters to protest the show following its release.
