In two separate instances Friday, parents were forced to save their daughters from vicious animal attacks in broad daylight on both sides of the country.

Friday afternoon in Woodland Hills, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles, a father was returning home with his two-year-old daughter from preschool when a coyote attempted to drag the girl away. Ariel and Shira Eliyahuo, the girl’s father and mother, spoke with KTLA about the incident that took place just before 4 pm.

“For a second, he just turned inside the car and he just heard her screaming and he didn’t see the coyote, he thought she fell,” Shira explained of the attack caught on the families Ring security footage. “So he ran over and he saw the coyote.”

The child who had been taken from her car seat was not visible in the footage as the coyote could be seen scurrying in her direction from the left. While the father gathered belongings from the SUV, the girl is heard screaming as the coyote grabbed her somewhere on her leg and began to drag her facedown along the sidewalk.

As he realized what was happening, Ariel could be seen rushing to his daughters aid, grabbing her as he shouted at the animal before throwing what appeared to be a water bottle at it in an effort to scare it away. He was then seen rushing his child inside.

The girl was rushed to the emergency room where she was treated for scratches and bruising and administered the rabies vaccine and Shira told KTLA, “She has a lot of scratches on her left leg and one of them is really deep.”

When KTLA met up with the family at their home to discuss the encounter, what appeared to be the same coyote showed up prompting Ariel to grab a piece of wood to chase it off once more.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day a Connecticut mother rushed to the aid of her nearly six-year-old daughter Rylee MacNamara when she heard panicked screaming from outside the front door where her child was being attacked by a raccoon as she left for school.

Similarly captured by the families security camera, Logan MacNamara was seen grabbing the raccoon by the scruff of its neck after her daughter had repeatedly failed to kick the creature away that had grabbed a hold of her leg.

In the video posted to Facebook, the mother wrote, “Per Rylee’s request, ‘show everyone what the raccoon did’ we are headed to get checked out for rabies following this unprovoked raccoon attack. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this brave girl!”

Speaking with WABC, Rylee, who suffered a bite to her leg said, “It really hurt.”

Logan told the outlet, “I thought maybe she slammed her finger in the door. I definitely wasn’t expecting to see a raccoon wrapped around her leg.” Having also received scratches from the animal, both received rabies shots as a precaution.

Commenting on the mother’s response, wildlife biologist Geoff Krukar from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection told Fox 61, “The mother behaved in a way that was very heroic. I think she did everything, everything correctly. By avoiding getting bit, warning the neighbor to stay back and getting the child to safety.”

He went on to explain that seeing a raccoon in daylight wasn’t necessarily an indicator of the animal being rabid, but if “they see a raccoon that’s acting abnormally that could be frothing at the mouth, pursuing them, getting in close proximity, they should definitely report that to the authorities.”

At the time of this posting, animal control had not captured the raccoon in Connecticut and the presence of coyotes in Los Angeles remains prevalent though attacks are reportedly uncommon.
