Brazenly covering for President Joe Biden’s failures has led some in corporate media to behave as though they were backed into a corner when the potential of accountability is raised, leading one MSNBC anchor to go so far as to refer to talk of impeaching a particular official as “bullying” and a “threat.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is vying to become speaker of the House when the 118th Congress begins in January and has taken to promising some serious red meat to satisfy voters, particularly when it comes to the southern border crisis. Ahead of Thanksgiving, the lawmaker specifically called for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign or face a thorough investigation of his actions to see if impeachment is warranted and, for MSNBC’s Alex Witt, such reasoned cause and effect was beyond the pale.
Saturday, she spoke with Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) about the matter and asked for his “reaction to Kevin McCarthy and his threats of investigations if the secretary doesn’t resign–is this what we can expect if Kevin McCarthy becomes speaker of the House? Leadership by bullying?”
“Is this an appropriate tone or approach to address issues with immigration?” Witt went on.
As had previously been reported, McCarthy had been measured in his denouncement of Mayorkas who has continually been questioned throughout Biden’s presidency for his role in the record border crossing for fiscal year 2022 that amounted to a total of encounters and believed “gotaways” of around 2.7 million.
“His actions have produced the greatest wave of illegal immigration in recorded history. Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty. This is why today I am calling on the secretary to resign,” McCarthy stated. “He cannot and must not remain in that position. If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure. We’ll determine whether we can begin impeachment inquiry.”

To that rationale and Witt’s inquiry, Quigley suggested his fellow congressman might actually be doing what the constituency had elected him for, “I think we heard about this for coming months. It sounds like McCarthy preaching to the faithful. He knows he’s gonna be in a tight race for speaker within his own party to get to that threshold number. So, he’s attempting to appease them at an early stage.”
“It’s well beyond constitutional purviews and I think it is what we should expect,” he further claimed after juxtaposing a potential investigation of Mayorkas with the partisan Jan 6 committee investigations.
“That’s unfortunate,” Witt concluded.
Earlier in the segment, she had also shared a statement from DHS that denied wrongdoing on the part of Mayorkas and read, “Members of Congress can do better than point the finger at someone else; they should come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws, which have not been overhauled in over 40 years.”
