President Joe Biden, who turned 80 on Sunday, and first lady Jill Biden called in during NBC’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday and the call began as you might expect with an octogenarian.
“I’m not one to take a phone call during TV, but I think I should answer this one,” NBC meteorologist Dylan Dreyer said as the call came in, holding up her phone and showing a picture of Biden. “Hello, Mr. President?”
For nearly 30 seconds there was silence mixed in with what sounded like the Bidens mumbling to each other confusingly as Dreyer desperately tried to connect.
“I don’t think I can hear you…” she said in response to the awkward confusion. “Can you hear me, Mr. President?”
“We’re here,” Biden eventually responded.
“Oh, I was so worried this call wasn’t going to go through,” a relieved Dreyer replied.
The Bidens spent their Thanksgiving holiday in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a yearly tradition, staying at the sprawling waterfront compound owned by billionaire David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm. The family’s Thanksgiving menu consisted of thyme-roasted turkey, stuffing and sherry gravy, seared scallops, several pies, and the president’s favorite ice cream, chocolate chip, according to various media reports.

“I want to say thanks to the firefighters and police officers, first responders. They never take a break,” the president said once the NBC connection was made.
“And God bless our troops for sure,” the first lady chimed in.
“And by the way, we’re going to be talking to some of our troops later in the day, both here and abroad. I hope everybody remembers. We remember them every single day,” Biden said in response to the cue. “God bless our troops for real!”
It all made for cringeworthy television in the eyes of many social media users — here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:

Biden just came on a live phone call for the parade on NBC and he sounded like an 80 year old answering the call. Ohh wait.

The segment where NBC had Joe Biden join the parade coverage via a cellphone went about as well as you’d expect
