Pediatrician argues a child can’t decide to get a tattoo, but puberty blockers and gender surgery are OK

The intellectual dishonesty regarding the promotion of puberty blockers and irreversible surgeries was proven boundless by a Seattle pediatrician whose advocacy for what decisions children are capable of making drew a line, not at genital mutilation, but rather tattoos.

Dr. Cora Breuner is both a pediatrician at Seattle Children’s Hospital and a professor at the University of Washington Medical Center who, for years, has promoted sexuality education for children. Recently, after a Highland, NY mother was arrested for allowing her 10-year-old son to get a tattoo after he asked for one, the doctor opined to The New York Times about the permanency of such a decision.

“It is a permanent mark or a symbol you are putting on your body,” Breuner argued, “and I don’t think kids under 18 have that kind of agency to make a decision.”

In some states, a minor can receive a tattoo with parental approval, however, New York is not one of them. For the doctor, the exceptions needed to be addressed as she told the outlet, “We need to look at these laws again.”

While Breuner’s opinion seemed to line up in favor of the mother being charged with endangering the welfare of her child, her signing on to the Academy of Pediatrics 2018 statement titled, “Ensuring Comprehensive Care and Support for Transgender and Gender-Diverse Children and Adolescents” stood in stark contrast where truly irreversible procedures performed on children was concerned.

In her capacity as the chairperson for the Committee on Adolescence, Breuner joined a slew of other pediatricians in recommending “youth who identify as TGD [transgender] have access to comprehensive, gender-affirming, and developmentally appropriate health care that is provided in a safe and inclusive clinical space.”

The statement said puberty blockers reduce, “the need for later surgery because physical changes that are otherwise irreversible (protrusion of the Adam’s apple, male pattern baldness, voice change, breast growth, etc) are prevented.”

Later on, a chart was introduced that claimed puberty blockers are a reversible treatment with a footnote that stipulates, “The effect of sustained puberty suppression on fertility is unknown.” That same chart noted the irreversibility of “gender-affirming surgeries” but contended they only occurred for children on a case-by-case basis.

“When applicable, eligibility is usually determined on a case-by-case basis with the adolescent and the family along with input from medical, mental health, and surgical providers,” the statement referenced, ignoring the apparent echo chamber within that community.

As it happened, two years earlier Breuner led the writing of the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on “Sexuality Education for Children and Adolescents” where she touted the pediatrician’s role in recognizing the pleasurability of sexual activity, the same pediatricians whom the 2018 statement recommended “have a role in advocating for, educating, and developing liaison relationships with school districts and other community organizations to promote acceptance and inclusion of all children without fear of harassment, exclusion, or bullying because of gender expression.”

NPR promoted Breuner’s guidelines in 2019 alongside recommendations from Dutch sex educator Elsbeth Reitzema who went beyond children exploring their own bodies to approving of children exploring their playmates as well, with key rules being, “The first rule is everyone was to agree it’s a nice idea to play. … That’s about affirmative consent. And childhood is a great time to practice that. The second rule is you may do no pain. And rule number three is that nothing goes in any orifices.”

Meanwhile, while tattoos have been proven removable through laser surgeries, children who had been coaxed into having mastectomies or genital mutilation procedures in the name of affirmation who go on to regret those decisions are left with no means to truly reverse their life-altering choices.
