The United States men’s national soccer team unveiled new uniforms for the World Cup, changing the patriotic red stripes in their crest to rainbow hues in support of the LGBTQ+ community. But Twitter is not here for the baseless “virtue signaling.”
Qatar is the first Middle Eastern country to host the soccer tournament and the location selection has been hugely controversial due to Qatar’s vocal anti-gay policies.
It is illegal to be gay in the Muslim country and a World Cup ambassador said homosexuality is “damage to the mind” in a recent interview with a German TV station, prompting many to call for a boycott of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s pinnacle competition.
Many players have voiced fears for gay and female fans traveling to the competition that only takes place every four years, concerned that Qatar’s discriminatory laws could endanger certain fans.
“The USMNT appear to have made an immediate stand on their arrival in Doha, though, by changing the usual red stripes on their crest to a rainbow,” the Daily Mail reported. “Pictures from the Al Gharrafa SC Stadium in Ar-Rayyan, where the US team trained on Monday, showed a huge US crest on the wall, alongside the slogan ‘One Nation.'”

Qatar’s human rights abuses aside, fans were not in support of the move by the men’s national soccer team.
Then LBGTQ can rep themselves in FIFA but this is countries in this tourney, not movements, and the USA is red, white, and blue.

How about they just play soccer? If they were so concerned about the LGBTQ community, they’d never have held the World Cup there and countries would have boycotted, instead it’s all about virtue signaling, smh.

The US will face Wales in their first match of the November 20-December 18 tournaments before facing England and Iran.
USMNT is listed as 100-1 longshots in the 2022 World Cup odds from Caesars Sportsbook after missing the 2018 World Cup. Five-time world champions Brazil are listed as the 4-1 favorites despite leaving Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino off their roster.
