An exchange of gunfire reportedly took the lives of a beloved grocery store clerk and an alleged robbery suspect in crime-infested Chicago on Friday night.

An initial report from the Associated Press indicated that the clerk and the suspect shot each other in the incident that occurred at the El Barakah Supermarket in Chicago’s South Shore.

Subsequent reporting from other news outlets suggests that a properly licensed customer might have shot the alleged would-be thief.

“A man attempted to rob the supermarket at gunpoint right before closing time around 6:20 p.m., according to Chicago Police. The robber pointed the gun at the 64-year-old clerk who is also believed to be the owner of the store, police said. The robber was in turn met by a third man – a customer – who had a Firearm Owners Identification card and a concealed carry license, police said. It was not clear who fired shots first. Witnesses said they heard two shots, a pause, then two more shots – four shots fired in all,” CBS News explained.

ABC 7 Chicago indicated that the licensed gun owner who allegedly prevented the robbery by reportedly shooting at the suspect may have instead been another store employee.

An investigation by Chicago PD detectives is ongoing.

According to Fox News, the alleged hold-up man, 34, allegedly shot store employee Ali Hassan in the chest and back. Also wounded in the chest, the suspect fled the store but collapsed to the sidewalk nearby and was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMTs rushed Hassan to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition where he was subsequently tragically pronounced dead.

“The kindness Hassan showed in everyday moments, neighbors say, will never be forgotten,” CBS added.

Cops reportedly found three handguns at the scene.

But far-left Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot continues to seem oblivious to the crime epidemic, including rampant shootings every weekend, in her city which is ruining the quality of life for her constituents and is resulting in an exodus of businesses and individuals from the area.

Democrat Lightfoot is up for reelection on February 28 in a multi-candidate field. A runoff for the top-two candidates, if necessary, is set for April 4.

According to a website that tracks Chicago crime and that differs to some degree from Chicago PD stats, to date, nearly 600 persons have been shot in killed in the Windy City (out of about a total of 640 homicides), while nearly 2,700 were wounded in shootings.

Pursuant to Chicago PD data, about 7,400 robberies have occurred year to date.

The crime wave in Chicago and Illinois generally is likely going to get even worse, given that the state under pandering, progressive Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who of course was reelected last week, passed a law that takes effect in January and is equivalent to New York’s disastrous bail reform.

Boss Toni and the Illinois Black Legislative Caucus wanted that No Cash Bail  Safe-T Act pushed through the legislature and signed by the governor despite 100 of 102 state’s attorneys warning that it is a disaster and will get worse when the jails open their doors in January. Toni got what she wanted. Crime rises, Chicago dies, the papers endorse her, and the people vote Democrat, giving support to the Safe-T Act against the interests of their own public safety. Toni the Boss. Resistance is futile…
