Wa-Po’s Jennifer Rubin, DC libs HOT for farfetched idea of Liz Cheney for speaker

With the House race remaining uncalled, discussions have emerged on both sides of the aisle regarding who should be the next speaker.

On the right, the discussions have naturally centered largely around current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican.

But on the left, the discussions have centered around someone else altogether — outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney, also a Republican, albeit one who just got voted out of office this election cycle (not that House rules require the speaker to be in Congress).

The idea appears to be the brainchild of Jennifer Rubin, a Washington Post columnist who for most of her career was a staunch Republican, but who completely flipped positions on everything in 2016 because of former President Donald Trump.

“OK, I’m sold. Liz Cheney for Speaker,” Rubin tweeted Friday morning.

Rubin’s fellow blue-check-mark leftists seemed to love the idea.

“WaPo columnist Jennifer Rubin suggested that if the GOP gets control of the House, Democrats should nominate Liz Cheney as Speaker. Brilliant idea in many ways!” CNN contributor and former Nixon-era White House counsel John Dean tweeted.

Left-wing activist Zack Czajkowski, who served as a field organizer for former President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign and as vote director for former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, concurred.

“Why not Liz Cheney as a transition Speaker of the House. It’ll piss off both Democrats and Republicans. She’s a responsible adult with a conservative voting record, a proven ability to work across the aisle, and most importantly has unflappable morale courage under pressure,” he tweeted.

However, these far and few voices of the agreement were quickly drowned out by a loud chorus of fierce disagreement from leftists who were outright offended by the notion of Democrats choosing Cheney as their speaker.

After all, while Cheney frequently acts like a Democrat these days, particularly regarding her endless commentary about former President Donald Trump, she’s still technically a card-carrying member of the Republican Party.

Other leftists have meanwhile suggested that allegedly “saner,” more “moderate” Democrats and Republicans should team up to elect Cheney as their apparent joint speaker. Why? As a rebuke to so-called “Trumpism.”

But fierce Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene have already made it abundantly clear that this is never going to occur.

“There will NOT be a Liz Cheney Speakership. She’s looking for a job, but she won’t get that one. Any Republican who would vote for Liz Cheney would be voting for Biden’s agenda,” the congresswoman tweeted Friday.

That’s true. Like Rubin, Cheney has essentially become a Democrat, meaning there’s no reason for Republicans to back her for anything. Indeed, it’s likely why she got completely trounced in the Wyoming GOP primary election this year.

So if not McCarthy or Cheney, then who? How about Trump … ?

Believe it or not, but it’s an idea that’s gained popularity with some for various reasons.

Writing for The Hill in in September, contributor Steve Israel noted that electing Trump as speaker would provide him with the perfect chance to enact some justice for all the alleged crimes that have been committed against him.

“At long last, he has a perfect license to investigate any ridiculous conspiracy he can invent or imagine. Maybe he starts by settling a few old scores, convening select committees looking into former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton’s email servers and the Mueller investigation. From there, he can move on to Hunter Biden’s laptop and his own version of a Jan. 6 committee,” he wrote.

“He may be banned from Twitter, but he’d be back on every TV screen in America in primetime. It’s Trump’s dream reality show. And if he wants to keep it going, he can stay in the role for as long as House Republicans keep voting for him, rather than being limited to just one more term if he were to win the 2024 presidential election,” Israel added.
