Comedian Dave Chappelle wound up the Saturday Night Live crowd this week as he explained former President Donald Trump’s stardom being birthed out of his ability to be an “honest liar.”
“Been watchin’ the news, now they’re declaring the end of the Trump era,” Chappelle said. “A lot of you don’t understand WHY Trump was so popular but I get it, because I hear it everyday, he was very loved.”
“He’s what I call an honest liar. But I’m not joking right now, an honest liar,” the former Saturday Night Live host continued. “That first debate, I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never seen a white male billionaire screaming at the top of his lungs ‘THIS WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED.’”
“I know the system was rigged, because I use it,” Chappelle recalled Trump saying before reacting to the truth bomb with a boisterous “G*d-d*amn!”

Chappelle recounted Hillary Clinton trying to discredit Trump by announcing victoriously, “He doesn’t pay his taxes!”
“[Trump] shot right back, ‘that makes me smart!’” Chappelle said.
“And then [Trump] said: if you want me to pay my taxes, then change the tax code, but I know you won’t because your friends and your donors enjoy the same tax credits I do.”
“And that, my friends, a star was born,” Chappelle concluded. “No one had ever seen anything like that, no one had ever seen somebody come from inside of that house, outside, and tell all the commoners, ‘we are doing everything that you think we are doing, inside of that house. And just went right back in the house and started playing the game again.”
Despite several recent late-night comedic duds, “The Closer” star was well-received for his appearance in what has become a bit of a post-election stand-up tradition on the show.

In the full monologue, Chappelle also threw jabs at Kanye West for his recent antisemitic comments and statements about Jewish people running Hollywood.
“Before I start tonight,” Chappelle opened as he unfolded a note he had in his pocket. “I just wanted to read a brief statement that I’ve prepared.”
“I denounce antisemitism in all its forms, and I stand with my friends in the Jewish community,” he read robotically. “And that, Kanye, is how you buy yourself some time.”
“I don’t think Kanye is crazy. He’s possibly not well. I’ve been to Hollywood. This is just what I saw. It’s a lot of Jews. Like a lot. But that doesn’t mean anything. There’s a lot of black people in Ferguson, Missouri. It doesn’t mean they run the place,” he quipped.
