Experts and physicians are pushing hard for children to mask up once again in schools as an alleged trifecta of the flu, RSV, and COVID cases are filling up pediatric wards with young patients.
The flu season is back and it is an aggressive one according to doctors. At the same time, a wave of RSV is hitting young children which is a virus that can be deadly. Of course, there is also the coronavirus still making the rounds.
Three states are at full capacity and nearly eight in 10 pediatric beds are occupied nationally according to the Daily Mail.
Experts are claiming that lockdowns and masks stopped the spread of COVID but many doubt that assertion. The result of all of those heavy-handed measures prevented children from catching the necessary germs that help build immunity against seasonal viruses and this aggressive flu season seems to be a result of that.

Experts are lining up, calling for children to once again suffer under new mask mandates. Unsurprisingly, they are coming out of the woodwork right after the midterm elections.
Dr. William Schaffner, who is a top infectious disease expert at the influential Vanderbilt University, unbelievably asserted on Wednesday that it was “reasonable” to have children wear masks to school again because of the rise in respiratory illnesses according to Yahoo Life.
“We have learned through COVID that masks do indeed provide an additional layer of protection,” he remarked. “We have been anticipating that people of all ages that are interested in protecting themselves will do this.”
It's probable that the reason for the rise in cold and flu sickness in children (in Ontario) isn't that they aren't wearing masks, but rather that they have slightly underdeveloped immune systems because they've had to live in sanitary bubbles for the last 3 cold and flu seasons.

Dr. Mandie Svatek, who is a pediatrician at the University of Texas, also commented last week to KSAT that it was “definitely” time to “consider again” masks in the classroom.
“Face masks for children two years and older can definitely be considered during this time where viruses such as the flu are predominant in our area,” she remarked. “You may also consider mask wearing for children when Covid infection rates are high, for those children that have a weakened immune system, and to protect other family members that may be at risk in the household as noted above.”
Dr. Mark Hicar, who is a pediatric infectious disease expert at the University of Buffalo in New York, also claimed that it would be “perfectly reasonable” to have children mask up.
He also noted, “These infections are hard to avoid when spreading throughout the community and perfect mask use by a child can be a tough ask.”

Some experts believe that masking children stunts their verbal development and the ability to read facial expressions or recognize faces. And it is far from clear if masks are really effective at all in curbing the spread of viruses in schools.
The panic over the flu and RSV has already started. In Alabama, 13 schools have switched back to remote learning for a week to try and stave off a wave of viral infections. In Kentucky, at least 11 school systems were closed Monday due to the flu.
But it should be noted, it is flu season. The spread of it is not uncommon and tends to be widespread. This year, however, it seems more aggressive and we may have done it to ourselves.
