Air Force says there was ‘no intent’ behind phallic flight pattern but Twitter isn’t convinced

The U.S. Air Force has denied that a provocative flight pattern, in the shape of a penis complete with testicles, near a Russian military base in Syria was intentional and that the phallic image was merely a coincidence.

Aviation buffs noticed the familiar – but peculiar given the context – design on the flight tracker website lightRadar24 showing the loops flown by the KC-135 aerial tanker over the waters between Cyprus and Lebanon, setting the internet ablaze with conversation on whether it was a deliberate message to the Russians with the Italian newspaper la Repubblica speculating that the plane drew as penis in the sky in front of Russia’s naval base at Tartus, Syria.

“The KC-135 Stratotanker (RAKE71) operating in the Eastern Mediterranean adjusted between multiple different flight tracks during the course of the mission,” USAFE spokesman Captain Ryan Goss said in a statement, according to Task & Purpose. “While these adjustments and movements appear to create a vulgar outline, there was no intent by the pilots or the unit to do so. As we continue to look into this, USAFE-AFAFRICA, AMC [Air Mobility Command] and the USAF will continue to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and airmanship.”

Colonel Damien Pickart, the top spokesperson for the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command insisted that the flight pattern was a complete accident.

“We aware of the incident and are talking with the KC-135 crew to determine the details,” Pickart told Task & Purpose on Friday. “At this time, we do not believe the crew acted inappropriately, flying a refueling orbit consistent with requirements that met the needs of receiver aircraft.”

Accidental or not, the great “penis” in the sky was a topic of lively conversation on Twitter.

It wouldn’t be the first time that pilots have drawn penises in the sky. In 2017, the Navy was forced to admit that one of its pilots was responsible for the phallus in the deep blue yonder near Washington State’s Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Whether or not it was deliberate may never be known with tensions running high over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine but one has to admit that it’s a hell of a job of trolling Putin.
