Dem candidate’s parents accuse him of lying about scope of military service: ‘Has only disdain for military’

Allegations bordering on stolen valor have emerged against a Democrat in a swing-district legislative election in Washington state.

The accuser, moreover, is the candidate’s father, who says he is an apolitical U.S. Marine and former police officer.

Clyde Shavers, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and also has an Ivy League law degree, is running for a state House seat in the Whidbey Island area, which is about 30 miles north of Seattle.

In a blistering three-page letter sent to the Republican opponent in the election and published by local media, Clyde’s dad Brett, claims the candidate lied about the actual scope of his military service. “My wife and I write this only to correct the record factually and personally as a matter of integrity,” Brett declared.

“Clyde Shavers has run on a platform emphasizing his service in the U.S. Navy, claiming to have been installed as a nuclear submarine officer — a position which requires a great amount of training and three separate courses,” Fox News reported.

According to the letter, which is embedded below to allow readers to draw their own conclusions, “Clyde was never a submarine officer, not even for a day” and “Clyde has only disdain for the military.”

The letter goes on to assert that “there are no words that I have that could come close to overemphasize Clyde’s negative view of the military, his disdain of enlisted service members, and his revulsion to wear the uniform.”

The letter also claims that the candidate misrepresented various other details about his life and family history and only has tenuous ties to the area that he seeks to represent.

Shavers Letter by The Western Journal

Clyde Shavers told Herald.Net of Everett, Wash., in an email that “his political letter is inaccurate and, personally, very painful to me as his son. To be clear, this letter is all about politics.”

The elder Shavers and his wife reportedly attended the Stop the Steal rally in D.C. on January 6, 2021, but did not enter the Capitol itself.

“Shavers stated he is an attorney with Perkins Coie, a Seattle law firm, when he filed his personal financial disclosure form in January with the Washington Public Disclosure Commission (PDC). Yet, he has not passed the bar exam and plans to take the exam next year, Shavers told the Herald in an Oct. 17 email,” the local news outlet added.

According to his dad’s letter, Clyde Shavers has previously failed the bar exam. A passing grade is required for law school graduates to become licensed and “hang out a shingle” in the profession.

The unsatisfactory score puts Shavers in good stead with Democrats such as Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, “The Five” co-host Harold Ford, Jr., and the late JFK Jr., who also reportedly fell short on the very difficult test the first time around.

Clyde Shavers is running against GOP incumbent Greg Gilday in the high-profile (for Washington) contest in which both political parties have spent a lot of money because it could go red or blue.

The Herald reportedly switched its endorsement from Shavers to Gilday over the controversy.

“Brett Shavers told the Herald his son passed only one of three courses required to become a nuclear submarine officer. He said his son completed the first course, called the Naval Nuclear Power School, a 24-week program in Charleston, South Carolina. He later transitioned into a public affairs role,” the outlet also noted.

The letter also claims that the author warned his son before he launched the campaign, to tell the truth.

“This is the most difficult letter I have ever had the misfortune to write, because it is about my son, my wife’s son, and my daughter’s brother. We have nothing if we have no integrity. We have nothing if we have no honor..,” the letter concluded.

The candidate’s website currently reads that “[Shavers] commissioned into the nuclear submarine community and later transitioned as a public affairs officer in 2015.”
