Now within one week of the midterms, Democrats have demonstrated they will talk about seemingly anything to avoid confronting the number one concern of voters in the economy, and Tuesday night that included a statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledging the rampant violence in progressive-run cities with a shot taken against “thoughts and prayers.”
Selective outrage from the left is nothing new as nationally covered tragedies like that in Uvalde, Texas have been used to push agenda-driven legislation while rampant crime in urban areas and escalating homicide rates get ignored. Late Tuesday, Jean-Pierre released a statement on behalf of the White House using recent high-profile incidents yet again as a call to action to declare “enough is enough.”
“Over the last day and a half, more families across our county have been scarred by the devastating impacts of gun violence in America, including reports of a shooter today targeting two law enforcement officers from a rooftop in Newark, New Jersey,” she began.

Jean-Pierre then turned to the death of the rapper known as Takeoff, which had occurred early Tuesday morning in Texas before having to address the regular violence in Chicago.
“Last night in Houston, award-winning recording artist Kirsnick Khari Ball, also known as Takeoff, lost his life at 28 years old, and two others were injured. In Chicago, 14 were injured by gunfire–including three children–and one injured by a vehicle as she tried to flee last night. In Kansas City, six were injured and a teenager was killed at a Halloween party.”

Though she further acknowledged that not all violent crime makes the front page, like the varied scapegoats used to remove blame for inflation and gas prices, the statement subtly tried to imply Republicans did not want to address the problems in Democrat-run cities.
“These are only the shootings that made national headlines. In other cases, we may not know the names of the victims but we equally mourn with their families and communities. Our deepest condolences are with the families of each and every one of the victims,” she wrote before declaring, “Enough is enough. Gun violence in this country is an epidemic that will not end with thoughts and prayers alone.”

Of course, from there the message was clearly a push for further radical gun-grabbing policies rather than an end to the soft-on-crime policies from local district attorneys and cashless bail which has allowed for an uptick in recidivism.
“[President Joe Biden] will continue to do everything in his power to reduce gun violence,” Jean-Pierre claimed, “including calling on Congress to increase community violence intervention funding, ensure universal background checks, and send legislation to his desk banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. It’s past time we turn our pain into purpose.”

The turnabout in recognizing the problem more broadly than prior statements was not warmly received by those who saw through the election-focused PR.
