Trump calls Paul Pelosi attack ‘a terrible thing,’ says ‘country is out of control’ due to rising crime

Former President Trump called the vicious hammer attack against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, “a terrible thing” on Friday and then took direct aim at the skyrocketing crime prevalent in “Democrat-run cities.”

The attack took place at the Pelosi home in San Francisco. The suspect was arrested after allegedly taking a hammer to Paul Pelosi who had to have surgery for a fractured skill. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

“With Paul Pelosi, that’s a terrible thing, and with all of them, that’s a terrible thing,” Trump commented during an interview with the conservative Spanish-language network Americano Media.

“Look at what happened to San Francisco generally. Look at what’s happening in Chicago. It was far worse than Afghanistan,” he asserted.

Trump noted that “when I had Afghanistan … we went without one soldier being shot and you look at what happens in Chicago in one weekend; last weekend was brutal. It was like a warzone.”

“We have to give the police back their dignity, their respect. They can solve the problem. But today if a police officer says something that’s slightly out of line it’s like the end of his life, the end of his pension, the end of his family,” Trump charged. “We can’t do that. We have to give the police back their authority and their power and their respect. Because this country is out of control.”

David DePape, 42, had reportedly gotten past security, smashed in the sliding glass door, and entered the Pelosi home. Police conducted a wellness check on the 82-year-husband of Nancy Pelosi and found the two men fighting over a hammer. DePape got a hold of it and allegedly assaulted Pelosi before the police could wrest it from him.

He had reportedly screamed, “Where’s Nancy? Where is Nancy?” Nancy Pelosi was not home at the time of the attack. She was in Washington, D.C.

DePape is expected to be charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and additional felonies, according to the New York Post.

Trump spoke about Paul Pelosi’s attack while discussing out-of-control crime rates across the nation during the interview which took place at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The media claimed that he hadn’t addressed the attack on the Speaker’s husband but he did so during that sit-down.

“These people are crazy,” the former president commented in reference to Illinois lawmakers who passed a controversial law last year abolishing cash bail, which goes into effect in 2023.

“They’re gonna release stone-cold killers from jails, nobody knows why. I mean, they need room or something,” he railed.

Chicago has one of the highest crime and murder rates in the nation. In response to that dire situation, Democrats, who run the city and control most of the state are ending cash bail on January 1, 2023, as part of the “Safe-T” Act, which passed in 2021 in response to nationwide protests against police brutality following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others.

Judges will reportedly retain the discretion to order accused criminals to be incarcerated if they are deemed a threat to public safety. The law, however, will ostensibly make it harder to arrest suspects and keep them behind bars.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story misstated what clothing DePape was wearing at the time of the attack based on a false fact in earlier reports. We have made the correction and regret the error. Recently released video footage reveals further details.
