Chris Coons calls on pols to ‘stop demonizing folks’ only to demonize Trump over Paul Pelosi attack

Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat, called for Americans “to stop demonizing” one another in the wake of the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. But in the same breath, he turned around and demonized former President Donald Trump.

“President Biden and Democrats have stood behind law enforcement and strengthening protections for those in public life. That’s what I think we should be focusing on in this moment, when leaders of both parties — but so far not President Trump — have decried the attack on Paul Pelosi,” he said this Sunday.

“I think all of us in the wake of this attack on Paul Pelosi need to say that we are going to stop demonizing folks, because I think those kinds of- the sort of rhetoric that we’ve heard in too many ways in too many places can lead to violence by a small number of Americans who think that, when we describe our political opponents as our enemies, we’re calling for them to be attacked,” Coons added.

He made these remarks during an interview on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday.”

He was right about Trump not posting any statements about Pelosi. But on the other hand, Trump holds no elected position in office. As far as the world’s concerned, he’s just another random citizen — albeit one who may run for office in 2024.

He was also right about the need for people to stop demonizing one another. The problem is that he isn’t looking in the mirror closely enough, because much of the demonization has been coming from the left, not the right.

Case in point courtesy Hillary Rodham Clinton:

Despite the investigation into what happened still being in the early stages, Clinton has already decided that Republicans — all of them — are to blame. Never mind either suspect David DePape’s left-wing views or his mental issues.

Never mind, more importantly, that politically motivated violence is a two-way street.

Two months ago, a grown man ran over a teen, killing him, and then claimed said teen had been part of a “Republican extremist group.”

Back in June, a left-wing lunatic showed up outside conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home with the intention to break in, murder the justice, and then commit suicide.

Over the summer, dozens of churches and pregnancy centers were vandalized or set on fire by a left-wing pro-abortion groups.

None of these acts of politically motivated violence inspired any sort of similar complaints from Clinton or any other prominent leftist.

Likewise, the media didn’t run column after column about political violence spurred by the left. Instead the media just dry-reported the facts and moved on.

It’s a cycle that’s been seen time and time and time again — during the violent Black Lives Matter Riots; after Rep. Maxine Waters urged her supporters to harass then-Trump administration officials; and even after the baseball shooting of 2017.

If you recall, the shooting by Bernie Sanders follower James Hodgkinson nearly left current House Minority Whip Steve Scalise deceased.

How did the media respond? Did they bemoan left-wing violence? Did they blame Bernie? Did they act even remotely how they’re acting now?

Nope.

Instead they ran stories like this:

  • Vox: “‘The blood is on their hands’: how the right-wing media blamed Democrats for the Scalise shooting”
  • Associated Press: “Dems bridle as some in GOP blame shooting on the left”
  • NBC News: “After Shooting, Some in GOP Blame Incitement by Democrats”
  • Sun-Sentiel: “After shooting, blame game sinks to shameful depths”
  • Politico: “Some on right blame anti-Trump rhetoric for shooting”

Instead of focusing on the shooter, the entire establishment press attacked the few Republicans who ostensibly blamed the shooting on Democrats.

Republicans like then-Rep. Chris Collins.

“I can only hope that the Democrats do tone down the rhetoric. The rhetoric has been outrageous. The finger-pointing, just the tone and the angst and the anger directed at Donald Trump, his supporters. Really, then, you know, some people react to things like that. They get angry as well. And then you fuel the fires,” he said.

To be fair, Collins’ remarks did sound somewhat similar to what Clinton tweeted. The difference is that whereas the media attacked Republicans like Collins for blaming Democrats, some in the media are now echoing Clinton’s rhetoric to a T.

Case in point from The Atlantic:

Nobody is celebrating the attack on Pelosi. As for the non-politically motivated attack that left Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican, with broken ribs, Pelosi’s own daughter celebrated it, as did countless other leftists.
