Parents fume over local library’s kids’ section featuring a queer ‘manifesto’ and ‘pornographic’ sexuality guide

In Thomasville, Georgia, parents are furious over a local library featuring in its kids’ section the queer manifesto “All Boys Aren’t Blue” and what is described as a pornographic sexuality guide called “It’s Perfectly Normal.”

Several books are being protested after parents discovered much to their collective horror that they were being provided by the library, according to the Daily Mail.

Aside from “All Boys Aren’t Blue” and “It’s Perfectly Normal,” the library is also promoting “Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out.” Another book deemed as offensive is “The Hate U Give,” which delves into police brutality against black youths and teenagers.

At the very least, parents are demanding the books be removed from the children’s section at the library.

One mother named Carla Defnall went into detail about “It’s Perfectly Normal” at a recent school board meeting, stating, “I have marked all of the narratives and pictures, which I will be happy to show. It seems clear to me that this book is pornographic and it is against the law to furnish it to children and teens.”

The Thomasville Times Enterprise reported on the school board meeting and Defnall wasn’t the only parent who spoke out.

Mary Beth Huber, another mother also railed about the book, “We picked up the same book in the little teeny children’s section, and they don’t need a detailed description on how to have group sex. They don’t need pictures of men and men in bed together, or men and women in bed together. These are our concerns for our little children. Put the book in the adult section.”

Joan Young came to the meeting to read a letter from Barbara Cohenour, another community member who was unable to attend but has kept herself apprised of the issue.

“What the community is seeking is for the library board to adopt a policy against pornography in the children and teen sections,” Cohenour said in her letter. “Books on these subjects should, at the very least, be in the adult section with the stipulation that they can only be checked out by those over 18 years of age. Parents who want to have this information can check the books out for them.”

“Mrs. Phillips, many have spoken highly of you as an excellent librarian, and I am certainly willing to accept that fact. But I personally don’t have time to come to the library to read every new book you shelve and fill out your form,” she stated in her letter. “As I am a taxpayer, paying your salary, I say that the responsibility is yours to keep unacceptable materials off the shelves.”

Another book that riled the parents was one titled, “Me and Earl The Dying Girl,” which is a novel about a teenager with leukemia.

Library Director Holly Phillips addressed the issue at the school board meeting, “I do want to update you all on the book challenges that we’ve received in the last few weeks. I assure you all that we are following our policies and we are looking at every eligible book individually and objectively. My hope, my sincere hope, is that as this process continues that people will feel that their voices are being heard and see, through our actions, that we are being objective and that we are working with them.”

“I believe that it is vital to preserve the integrity of the public library as a source of information for every single person in our community and not to discriminate or silence diversity and pride,” she asserted. “We thank every person who’s given their opinion on what they’d like to see or not see in our library, I know we can work through this democratically and fairly together.”

“All Boys Aren’t Blue” has been banned in 29 different school districts. Many parents don’t want their young children exposed to it.

The woke author of the book, George M. Johnson uses “they/them” pronouns. He told NPR in an interview recently, “Any time you write a book where you write about your truth, there are going to be people who want to silence that truth.”

There will be a meeting in November between the library and parents to discuss removing the offensive books. They will be reconsidering a total of 31 books.
