Mayorkas tries to turn tables on GOP, says talking about open border ‘music to the smugglers’ ears’

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas seemed to suggest that the border crisis would go away if we just stopped talking about it as he shrugged off threats of impeachment by pointing a finger at Republicans.

There are few things as on-brand for President Joe Biden’s administration as redefining language and ascribing responsibility to others. True to that end, Mayorkas followed the lead of border czar Vice President Kamala Harris, who at once claimed the border was both secure and the crisis was the fault of former President Donald Trump, to accuse the GOP of encouraging illegal aliens to come to the United States.

While meeting with The Dallas Morning News editorial board, the secretary argued, “The political cry that the border is open is music to the smugglers’ ears, because they take that political rhetoric and they market it.”

This argument followed his response when asked about a letter from Republican Sens. Ted Cruz (TX) and Lindsey Graham (SC) seeking a resolution for “gross dereliction of duty” or risk a potential impeachment should control of Congress shift after the midterms.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do, and I intend to continue to do it. That’s my response,” Mayorkas tersely offered.

As previously covered by American Wire, Graham and Cruz had written, “Your failure to faithfully enforce this nation’s immigration laws and willful blindness to the very real humanitarian crisis at our southern border amounts to a gross dereliction of duty and a violation of your oath of office. Historically high levels of illegal immigration and illicit drug trafficking demonstrate that our southern border is open for every kind of public health and national security threat imaginable.”

The duo went on to cite over “4.4 million illegal crossings, including over 3.5 million apprehensions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and at least 900,000 getaways, who evaded apprehension,” under Mayorkas’ watch.

They also raised the deadly serious concern of drug trafficking which has led fentanyl to “become the leading cause of death of Americans ages 18 to 45.”

The letter from the senators had been preceded by a resolution cosponsored by 31 GOP representatives including eight Texas Reps: Brian Babin, John CarterMichael Cloud, Louie Gohmert, Lance Gooden, Chip Roy, Pete Sessions, and Randy Weber.

It was also followed by damning evidence obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that found Mayorkas had been alerted on Sept. 24, 2021, that the alleged whipping by mounted Border Patrol agents of Haitians had never occurred but he ran with the narrative anyway saying “The images horrified us in terms of what they suggest and what they conjure up.”

Worth noting is the secretary’s remarks from earlier this year before the Disinformation Governance Board was scrapped when he had contended, “The fact is that disinformation that creates a threat to the security of the homeland is our responsibility to address, and this department has been addressing it for years, throughout the years of the prior administrations and an ongoing basis.”
