The contest in Texas for a highly fought-for House seat is getting nasty with Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez outrageously asserting that Republican Rep. Mayra Flores “can’t think for herself, can’t speak for herself, can’t act for herself, can’t vote for herself.”
The two are vying to represent Texas’ 34th Congressional District on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Gonzalez is seeking re-election and has fought dirty his entire campaign. Flores, however, is not some weak, fragile wallflower. She has stood toe-to-toe with Gonzalez and has pushed back… hard.
Gonzalez made his misogynistic and slanderous comments at a get-out-the-vote rally held at the La Sierra Event Center in Harlingen, Texas on Wednesday, according to Fox News.
“We can’t do this alone,” Gonzalez told his supporters. “We need everyone’s help, we need everyone’s friends, everyone’s family, and everyone’s friends’ and families’ friends and family. That’s the way we’re gonna push back on these outside resources coming here picking a candidate, a hand-picked candidate that can’t think for herself, can’t speak for herself, can’t act for herself, can’t vote for herself.”
“After we lost 19 children and two teachers in a massacre in Uvalde, Texas, her first vote in the United States Congress was a no vote on the Keep Communities Safer Act,” he stated, making it extremely clear he is for gun control.
He pulled another stunt earlier this week where he ran an ad in his re-election campaign that featured an edited, unappealing photo of Flores. Which is hard to do considering she is a beautiful woman and photogenic. Her eyebrows were allegedly edited to make her look more aggressive. It also showed her holding a firearm which was another dig at her voting against the Keep Communities Safer Act.
The original picture was first shared on Flores’ Instagram account.

“Republican Mayra Flores’ first vote in Congress was against the Bipartisan Safe Communities Act,” the ad’s narrator stated as the edited image of Flores flashed on the screen. “She voted against keeping our children safe in schools, against keeping weapons out of the hands of Mexican cartels, and against keeping guns out of the hands of criminals with a prior history of domestic violence.”
After the tragic shooting at Uvalde, Mayra Flores' first vote in Congress was AGAINST a bipartisan school safety bill. We need a representative that works to protect our children and families; not someone who puts them in danger. Remember to vote for Vicente Gonzalez. pic.twitter.com/h4liKjAFEp

“First, Vicente Gonzalez hired a racist blogger to attack me for my heritage. Now Vicente is doing the dirty work himself with this shameless and pathetic Photoshopping. The people in the [Rio Grande Valley] are smarter than this and will see right through Vicente’s scare tactics and constant lies,” Flores told Fox News.

Her statement refers to Texas political blogger Jerry McHale who called her “Miss Frijoles” and “Miss Enchiladas,” according to KERA-TV.
McHale claimed she was “playing the race card” and was a “cotton pickin’ liar” when she recounted picking cotton with her parents, who legally emigrated from Mexico to the US when Flores was a child.
An analysis of campaign finance statements showed that Gonzalez’s campaign has given McHale $2,200 since October 2021, according to The Texas Tribune.
She told the Texas Tribune in an interview that she was “disgusted that Vicente Gonzalez has hired a creepy blogger to attack my Mexican heritage and sexually degrade me, but I won’t let this distract me from my work.”
Flores introduced the Reduce Gun Violence Act in September, which her campaign says is a “comprehensive funding package of more than $11 billion dollars to schools across the country to increase physical security and access mental health resources.”
Gonzalez described Flores’ political stances as “extreme right-wing, election-denying, thinks that January 6 was a hoax, believes QAnon conspiracy theories,” according to the Washington Examiner.
