Texas Sheriff Javier Salazar is playing a politically partisan game, certifying that illegal immigrants who were flown to Martha’s Vineyard were victims of a crime and qualify for a visa, but he didn’t go directly after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over it.

Salazar, who is a Democrat and the sheriff of Bexar County, submitted certification documents that will allow the nearly 50 illegal immigrants from Venezuela to apply for U visas, which grant crime victims nonimmigrant status in the US and ensure they are available as witnesses during investigations or trials. It’s seen as a purely political maneuver that potentially indicates a very weak case on the legality of flying them to Martha’s Vineyard.
“Based upon the claims of migrants being transported from Bexar County under false pretenses, we are investigating this case as possible Unlawful Restraint,” Salazar proclaimed in a statement he made to WGBH News.
Salazar contends that the migrants were reportedly given false information about where they were going and the support they would receive when they got to their destination.
The left is firing its big guns at DeSantis over the incident. The day before Salazar’s move, the Department of the Treasury announced that it would investigate the Florida governor’s usage of COVID relief money and the “allowability” of funding migrant transportation with that money or interest earned on it.

It appears that Salazar was waiting for that development before launching his official investigation, claiming that the illegal immigrants were “lured” under “false pretenses.”
In his statement to Massachusetts news station WGBH, Salazar asserted that his office has identified suspects in the investigation but they are not releasing names publicly as the probe continues.
Immigration attorneys, including Rachel Self, are working jointly with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to interview the illegal immigrants as part of their highly politicized criminal investigation.

“Since the day they landed on Martha’s Vineyard, it has been clear to all who spoke to them that the migrants had been preyed upon and victimized,” Self told The Hill in a statement.
“These certifications will ensure that the migrants can continue to help our law enforcement officials and that they will be able to process and heal from the incredibly traumatic experiences they have suffered as a result of the cruel, heartless acts committed against them,” the leftist attorney said in a hyperbolic and vomitous political piece of grandstanding.
Democrats have also allegedly helped these poor, downtrodden, abused illegal immigrants in filing a class action lawsuit against DeSantis based on allegations of “fraud” and “misrepresentation.”

“Defendants manipulated them, stripped them of their dignity, deprived them of their liberty, bodily autonomy, due process and equal protection under law, and impermissibly interfered with the Federal Government’s exclusive control over immigration in furtherance of an unlawful goal and a personal political agenda,” the lawsuit posits, taking direct aim at DeSantis.
“We are grateful for Sheriff Salazar’s recognition of the gravity of these events. These certifications are an acknowledgment of the wrongs done to our clients and a crucial step in helping them to chart their path forward,” Carol Rose, who is the executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, said in a statement according to Boston.com. “Immigrants are human beings, not political props. We are proud that Massachusetts received these immigrants with compassion, and look forward to continuing to work with our clients as they begin their lives in our community.”
