Owners of grocery store that survived the Depression fear they won’t make it through the Biden regime

The owners of a 107-year-old Pennsylvania grocery store that survived the Great Depression are now in fear that President Joe Biden’s disastrous presidency, which has led to record inflation, will ultimately be their undoing.

Centermoreland Grocery & Deli owners Sharlene and Alan Weidner joined Todd Piro on Fox News’s “Fox and Friends First” on Friday to tell their story.

“It is getting tougher and tougher as the prices are rising, and we’ve had problems getting some products delivered when we first order them. They are on backlog. We are doing our best. But we’re not raising the prices because we want to be millionaires. We just try to keep our heads above the water,” Sharlene Weidner said.

Piro observed, “You are not making a wild profit margin on what you’re making there. Let’s look at some numbers. The cost of mom-and-pop staples surging year over year; eggs up almost 31 percent. Let’s face it, you use a lot of eggs in whatever you’re doing in that shop. Coffee up almost 16 percent, milk up 15 percent, bread almost 15 [percent].”

“When President Biden comes out and says, ‘Guys, inflation is not that bad,’ what is your reaction to a statement like that?” he asked.

“It’s worse than what it looks,” said Alan.

Sharlene explained that although they have not raised their prices, everyone is feeling the pinch in their wallets, which has resulted in fewer customers patronizing the store.

Piro listed some statistics including one from Metlife and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index which said that 71 percent of those polled believe the worst is yet to come.

“Last week I paid $37 for a case of eggs, and this week they were up to $66,” Sharlene said.

“I understand people want to go where they can get things cheaper and get a bigger order at one time, but our customers also appreciate us being there for the last minute things that they need and forgot to get at the store, and they are happy that we have it. And we are glad to be there for them.”

Alan observed that small businesses around the nation are struggling to stay afloat and are throwing in the towel one by one.

“There ain’t too many left out there, a lot of them are shutting right up,” he told Piro.

Data reported by the U.S. Labor Department shows the consumer price index – a metric used to track the price of everyday goods, including gasoline and rent – increased 8.3 percent in August compared to a year ago. Over that period, the price of groceries ballooned by 13.5 percent, which is the highest since May 1979, when another Democratic president named Jimmy Carter was in charge.
