Army secretary responds to widespread criticism: ‘I’m not really sure what ‘woke’ means’

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth joined other military leaders for a speaking event on Monday in which she defended the branch’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, and then laughably claimed she doesn’t know what “woke” means.

“We get criticized, frankly, sometimes for being ‘woke,'” Wormuth said. “I’m not sure what ‘woke’ means. I think ‘woke’ means a lot of different things to different people.”

“But, first of all, if ‘woke’ means we are not focused on warfighting, we are not focused on readiness, that doesn’t reflect what I see at installations all around the country or overseas when I go and visit,” the secretary argued, according to Fox News.

“I do think we do have a wide range of soldiers in our Army, and we’ve got to make them all feel included,” Wormuth said. “And that’s why a lot of our diversity, equity and inclusion programs are important.”

Recently, Fox News Digital revealed new training materials in use at the Air Force Academy that are part and parcel of woke progressivism. That is, the redefining of words and the control of the language we speak. Among other demands, cadets in the AF Academy are instructed to exclude words like “mom’ and “dad” from their vocabulary and to instead use terms like “parent or caregiver.”

The slide presentation is titled, “Diversity & Inclusion: What it is, why we care, & what we can do.”

Part of the training reads, “Some families are headed by single parents, grandparents, foster parents, two moms, two dads, etc.: consider ‘parent or caregiver’ instead of ‘mom and dad.'” It continues, “Use words that include all genders​: ‘Folks’ or ‘Y’all’ instead of ‘guys’; ‘partner’ vs. ‘boyfriend or girlfriend.’”

More of the training advises cadets to view other people through the lens of race; a viewpoint that is a tenet of the left’s divisive philosophies which transcend the military.

A spokesperson for the Air Force Academy told the outlet at the time, “As part of the Diversity & Inclusion Cadet Leadership Program, this conversation was developed by cadet leaders and USAFA staff to introduce all cadets to Department of the Air Force definitions of diversity and inclusion, as well as how these concepts enhance our warfighting effectiveness.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), a Green Beret and Afghan War Veteran told the outlet, “it’s been a tradition in the military to get letters from mom and dad or your boyfriend and girlfriend for as long as there’s been a military.”

“Now we’re instructing every cadet entering the Air Force to not say mom and dad, to not say boyfriend or girlfriend, and this kind of drive towards gender neutrality,” he contended. “I think the Air Force should be worried about the macro aggressions against America that are happening all over the world.”
