‘You promised a Sanctuary City!’ Mayor Adams declares state-of-emergency in NYC and breaks the internet

Standing unironically behind a podium that read “Get Stuff Done,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency on Friday over the influx of illegal migrants that have arrived in the Big Apple and blamed everyone and everything but the Biden administration and his own progressive promise of a Sanctuary City.

“We are in a crisis situation,” Adams said in a speech from City Hall. “This is a humanitarian crisis that started with violence and instability in South America, and it’s being accelerated by American political dynamics.”

“This crisis is not of our own making,” the mayor insisted, “but one that will affect everyone in this city now and in the months ahead.”

According to Adams, the city’s shelters are bursting, with more than 61,000 people currently housed in them, rooms in the more than 40 hotels that city officials have rented to keep up with the overspill aren’t cutting it, and New York City’s public schools are being overwhelmed with new students.

The cost of coping with the thousands of migrants, many of whom are reportedly fleeing the horrors of Venezuela’s dictatorship, is estimated at $1 billion, Adams said.

“This is unsustainable,” Adams said. “New York City is doing all we can, but we are reaching the outer limit of our ability to help.”

Now, to put Adams’ “crisis” into perspective, Fox News reports that more than 17,000 migrants have been bussed to the Big Apple since the spring.

According to the latest data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency had 203,597 encounters with migrants at the southern border in August alone.

While Adams would love to blame Republican governors, like Governor Greg Abbott, for sending the border-jumpers from the tiny towns in Texas to the lights on Broadway, the relocation is a bipartisan effort.

As American Wire News reported, the Democratic mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, praised the bussing of migrants to so-called “sanctuary cities” and dismissed the notion that the travelers were being “lied to” about their destination.

“Of course, they know where they’re going otherwise they wouldn’t be going,” she said.

And as Fox News notes, the Democratic mayor of El Paso, Texas, is “sending more migrants to New York City than Abbott.”

But the busses carrying migrants to the big city have proven too much for Adams, who asked Congress to shorten the current six-month mandatory waiting period for migrants to receive work papers. Without the ability to go to work, the migrants have few options beyond the city’s crowded shelters.

Adams also called on New York Governor Kathy Hochul and the feds to provide the help he desperately needs.

“We need help from the federal government,” he stated. “We need help from the state of New York.”

On Twitter, reactions to Adams’ pleas range from anger to laughter, as folks throw his promises of sanctuary in the mayor’s face.

One user who declared Adams to be “the worst Mayor ever,” stated, “too bad big mouth. Now you get what you deserve.”

“You promised a Sanctuary City,” the user reminded Hizzoner, “you’re a fake.”

Others praised the governors who have been sending the migrants Adams’ way.

“Thanks to the governors at the border states who have brought this crisis to a sanctuary city near you,” a user tweeted. “Heroes who care about our country.”

Still others on Twitter claimed Adams’ ineptitude as a mayor is indicative of the left’s “hypocrisy.”

“You would think that before you designate your city as a sanctuary city, you would have programs in place and resources set aside to accommodate these people,” the user stated. “Just goes to show the hypocrisy of the left.”

And then there were the many who, in the face of Adams’ failures, could do nothing but laugh…
