The U.S. Treasury Department’s new Advisory Committee on Racial Equity has appointed a vice chair with an interesting resume.
The 25-member committee has a mission to advise Secretary Janet Yellen and other officials “on efforts to advance racial equity in the economy and address acute disparities for communities of color,” according to the agency’s press release posted on Tuesday.
The number-two on the advisory panel is Felicia Wong, the president and CEO of the Roosevelt Institute, “a liberal think tank that wants to abolish for-profit prisons, reimagine capitalism, and put racial justice at the ‘center’ of all government policymaking,” Fox News reported.
Vice-chair Wong, who reportedly has ties to a George Soros organization in a previous job, “wants to defund the police and put racial justice at the center of all government policymaking,” the news outlet claimed.
“Any efforts to address inequality in the United States must account for the legacy of racial exclusion built into our economy,” Wong was quoted as saying in the press release.
Wong earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
Common sense suggests the recommendations from this group are presumably predetermined. In other words, the apparently stacked committee does not seem likely to, in the end, offer any ideological diversity in its deliberations.
“A critical piece of executing on our racial equity goals is bringing a wide set of outside perspectives and lived experiences to the decision-making table,” Secretary Yellen nonetheless asserted.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has characterized the committee creation as just the latest example of the wokeification of the federal government under the Biden administration.
This comes after VP Kamala Harris recently suggested that Hurricane Ian relief should be distributed on the basis of equity, a premise that the FEMA director subsequently rejected.
In a November 2021, 72-page paper for the Roosevelt Institute titled “A New Paradigm for Justice and Democracy: Moving beyond the Twin Failures of Neoliberalism and Racial Liberalism,” Wong and a co-author wrote, in part:
“True equity means equity of outcome, and not accepting the promise of opportunity within a system that continues to systematically exclude. It demands redistribution of resources—especially when wealth for some has been extracted from many—and a redistribution of decision-making power.”
The publication also called for the reform or elimination of the U.S. Senate filibuster because of its alleged legacy of white supremacy and anti-equity.
“Also on the 25-person committee is Lorella Praeli, co-president of Community Change Action, who called for defunding the police last year,” Fox News noted.
“In 2016, years before the ‘Defund the Police’ movement came to national prominence, Wong co-authored a report that argued that ‘police budgets should be reduced and for-profit prison systems must be done away with,'” Fox News also recalled.
In the meantime, nearly two dozen House GOP lawmakers have called for an investigation of the Pentagon’s chief of diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) for her not-so-inclusive social media activity.
A 30-day probe of her inflammatory tweets is reportedly underway.
