Sparks fly on ‘The Five’ as hosts fight hard over vicious hit on Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa

Controversy is raging after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was carted off the field following a vicious hit in Thursday night’s NFL primetime game, days after he may have suffered a concussion in the previous game, and sparks flew between Fox News hosts Dagen McDowell and Jesse Watters over whether he should have been playing in the first place.

During the second quarter in the contest between the Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals, Tagovailoa was sacked by defensive lineman Josh Tupou who slammed him to the turf, leaving him laying on the field as concern over a serious head injury resulted in an extended delay while he was attended to by medical staff before being taken off the field and to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion.

The hit came four days after Tagovailoa underwent concussion evaluations due to hitting his head on the field during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, which he finished out and was cleared to play on Thursday night where his injury ignited a firestorm over the league’s concussion protocols and the team, with some even calling for a criminal investigation.

On Friday’s edition of “The Five,” a heated discussion between Watters and McDowell ensued over the Dolphins’ handling of the situation and the reaction to the injury with sparks flying as the two passionately argued their points.

Watters took the view that there is no way that the Dolphins should have allowed  Tagovailoa to play in a game this early in the season with the stakes still relatively low, “It’s not like it’s the playoffs,” he said.

McDowell then expressed the “complete opposite opinion” as she lashed out against “uninformed hysteria and lunatics going off in the blue checkmark world” on Twitter.

“It is not anything about Twitter,” Watters shot back. “Everybody in the NFL and ESPN, former players and agents are saying this was horrible.”

“You would have to believe that on Sunday, Tua lied, the team lied, the league lied,” McDowell said as the two clashed.

“It doesn’t matter what Tua says,” Watters replied. “Players will say whatever they will to get back on the field.”

“You’d have to believe that there’s a conspiracy, including the independent concussion protocol doctor who lied about the reason that he was wobbly on Sunday and allowed him back in the game..”

“Players will say whatever they will to get back on the field,” Watters said as the two talked over each other in the intensely heated segment.

“This is uninformed hysteria by ESPN,” McDowell said.

“You are wrong,” Watters replied. “It is not uninformed. People are really upset with what happened,” as the two continued to joust until the end of the segment.

In an update on the injury, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Tagovailoa has returned to his South Florida home.

“Tua Tagovailoa is now at his home in South Florida, was in ‘good spirits’ upon landing with the team, per source,” he wrote on Twitter. “MRI to come, possibly second opinion. Initial tests showed no structural damage.”

As perhaps the biggest surprise of the young NFL season, the Dolphins roared out to a 3-0 start with the much-maligned Tagovailoa looking more like the superstar that he was in his college days, most impressively, slinging six touchdowns in an epic 42-38 comeback against the Baltimore Ravens in week one and two weeks later, knocking off the defending AFC East champion Bills in the contest when Tua may have suffered a concussion.

The Dolphins are off until next Sunday when they travel to New York to play the divisional rival Jets.
