‘Not really thrilled about that’: NY ‘Slutty Vegan’ restaurant giving some parents heartburn

New Yorkers are now able to enjoy the tasty delights of the burger chain Slutty Vegan which just opened a new location in Brooklyn, serving up its “Bangin’ Plant-Based” fare along with saucy names for menu items that are guaranteed to give parents heartburn.

Sex definitely sells at the Atlanta-based chain which has built a cult-like following, and customers turned out in large numbers to the restaurant in the New York City borough’s Fort Greene neighborhood, the northernmost outpost for Slutty Vegan which has locations in Georgia and Alabama.

“The bold cry of ‘We’ve got a virgin in the building!’ could be heard, over and over again, up and down the block,” the New York Post reported. “’I want a One Night Stand,’” one woman uttered to her girlfriend, who was there for a Hollywood Hooker. A lady in a hot-pink blazer exited the building, muttering to herself, ‘I’ve never been called a slut in my life!’ An 8-year-old boy turned to his mom, and asked, ‘What’s a slut?’”

In the fine tradition of the Slutty Vegan, new customers are referred to as virgins while returning customers are called sluts.

“I had to explain ‘what does slutty mean’ in 7-year-old language, and that was difficult, so I’m not really thrilled about that,” the Post quoted 50-year-old Alice Dietz who was waiting in line to buy her 7-year-old vegan son Teddy a kid’s meal.

“Whatever makes people think about vegan food and whatever makes people interested [is good],” the Crown Heights resident, who has been a vegan since age 15, said. “But as a mom, I kind of wish it wasn’t called that.”

“As she spoke, Teddy pestered her with more questions about the restaurant’s moniker,” the outlet reported. “‘It’s a controversial name that people call a girl,’ she said patiently to her son. ‘It’s very offensive. Mommy doesn’t like it, and you should never say it. It’s a girl who goes on dates with maybe more than one — with lots of different boys or girls.’”

Slutty Vegan was launched in 2018 by founder Pinky Cole, “a one-time Harlem restaurateur who began with the goal of reimagining how people view vegan food, wrapping it up in a playful, risqué bow,” according to the New York Post.

Since its rollout, the chain now boasts seven locations and is valued at $100 million, allowing Cole to create the Pinky Cole Foundation which, according to its website, is dedicated to “empowering generations of color to win in life, financially, and in the pursuit of their entrepreneurial dreams.”

Among menu items are the Ménage à Trois, a “Plant-based patty loaded with vegan bacon, vegan shrimp, vegan cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and our Slut Sauce on a vegan Hawaiian bun,” the Chik’n head, an “incogmeato Plant-based chicken tossed in buffalo sauce topped with pickles, vegan ranch and coleslaw on a vegan Hawaiian bun,” and the Hollywood Hooker, a “vegan chopped Philly with jalapeños, bell peppers and caramelized onions, topped with vegan provolone, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and vegan mayo, served on a hoagie roll.”
