The Senate’s vote to advance the continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through Dec. 16 came and went Tuesday leading one adviser of former President Donald Trump to conclude on the part of Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), it was “one of the greatest acts…of both political cowardice and political stupidity.”

Requiring 60 votes to move to the debate process, the GOP had as much, if not more, leverage going into Tuesday’s vote ahead of Friday’s deadline as the Democrats; especially with the midterms just around the corner. Instead, after Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) contentious permitting scheme was stripped from the package and the CR moved on 72-23.
America First Legal founder Stephen Miller joined “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Tuesday after the result was in when the Fox News host noted the startling absence of border security in the CR but “more than 12 billion in funding to Ukraine so we can inch closer to a war that will change everything.”
“The details of how these things are hammered out in Congress are often invisible to most people, but I think they want to believe the people they vote for are representing their interests,” Carlson suggested to Miller. “Are they in this case?”
“No, no they are not,” the former adviser replied bluntly. “This is one of the greatest acts, on the part of Mitch McConnell, of both political cowardice and political stupidity merged together.”
“This was a rare moment in which the moral course and the expedient course aligned perfectly,” Miller argued. “What do I mean by that? Morality, conscience, humanity demand that Republicans force the issue of border security on the CR. Put forward an amendment that not $1 of this CR, of this funding bill, can be used to resettle any more illegal aliens in the U.S.”
“That’s what morality demands,” he emphasized.
Miller then went on to point out that while McConnell has projected doubts on Republicans’ chances of garnering a majority, and seemed to be doing little behind the scenes to help the cause, this would have been the perfect opportunity to dispel the notion that he was anything but sincere.
“We’re days out from a midterm. They could’ve used this as a clarifying moment, indeed the only clarifying moment in two years, to say: who are the good guys and who are the evil-doers in the Senate; who is fighting for you and your family; and who is fighting for the cartels and open borders and the drug dealers poisoning our children–forcing that vote, yes, even if it means coming to the brink of or even in a government shutdown,” Miller contended. “We need every news station in the country to be forced for once to cover the travesty on our border.”
Carlson had pointed out as well, “Because that bill needed 60 votes to advance, Republicans had the leverage to force a vote on any one of their priorities like border security. Instead, dozens of Republican senators–senators you probably voted for–gave away that leverage for nothing.”
Meanwhile, Miller even presented an alternative if the Democrats wouldn’t budge on including border security in the government spending package and suggested the GOP challenge their opposition to “Pass the CR to the first of February and we’ll have a national referendum.”
“And if you elect a Republican House and you elect a Republican Senate, we will pass it into law on February 1, sealing up the border on the budget bill. A Brexit-style referendum for America’s Sovereignty. They could’ve done it and they would’ve won in a landslide not seen in a hundred years. But instead, they just made the trains run on time,” he lamented.
The outcome, as it looks now, led Carlson to believe there was only one takeaway: “So maybe if they keep losing, they want to lose. Maybe the outcome tells you the intention. If you keep reaching the same place, maybe it’s not by accident.”
