McCarthy accused of secretly targeting Madison Cawthorn’s re-election bid in effort to cleanse GOP

The Washington Post is once again using anonymous sources to smear Republicans, this time claiming that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) undermined former congressman Madison Cawthorn (N.C.) in order to purge the ultra MAGA from the GOP caucus.

It’s important to note, that the leftist media outlet has been accused in the past of using “anonymous sources” to write stories that can’t be verified which often act as propaganda for Democrats targeting Republicans.

The Washington Post is asserting that McCarthy and his top allies launched an effort to cleanse the caucus while promoting candidates that bow to McCarthy’s leadership. The allegation may or may not be true, but for now, there is no way to know.

“Targeting Cawthorn was part of a larger behind-the-scenes effort by top GOP donors and senior strategists to purge the influence of Republican factions that seek disruption and grandstanding, often at the expense of their GOP colleagues. The political machine around McCarthy has spent millions of dollars this year in a sometimes secretive effort to systematically weed out GOP candidates who could either cause McCarthy trouble if he becomes House speaker or jeopardize GOP victories in districts where more moderate candidates might have a better chance at winning,” WaPo charged.

The outlet goes on to report that McCarthy’s faction launched a secret effort to deny Cawthorn a second term while the former representative was bogged down in various scandals.

“GOP lobbyist Jeff Miller, one of McCarthy’s closest friends and biggest fundraisers, and Brian O. Walsh, a Republican strategist who works for multiple McCarthy-backed groups, were both involved in an independent effort to oppose Cawthorn as part of a broader project to create a more functioning GOP caucus next year,” the Washington Post reported.

“The allies close to McCarthy have sometimes taken steps to conceal their efforts, as they did in the Cawthorn case, with money passing from top GOP donors through organizations that do not disclose their donors or have limited public records, federal disclosures show,” the leftist media bullhorn claimed.

Cawthorn was very conservative and adamantly supported former President Trump. His relationship with McCarthy was said to be contentious but no solid proof has been presented that he targeted Cawthorn. Although it should be noted that the young Republican has now all but disappeared from public view.

The GOP firebrand found himself mired in unflattering headlines before losing his seat and made numerous stumbles that likely cost him his re-election bid.

According to Mediaite which has also bashed the former congressman from North Carolina, “Before losing his House seat, Cawthorn was drawing bad headlines and disapproval from Republicans as he claimed to have witnessed cocaine-fueled ‘orgies’ while in Congress, got caught multiple times trying to bring a gun onto a plane, was shown on video nakedly dry-humping another man, and other scandals. While Cawthorn conceded his race after his defeat, he has vowed to unleash ‘Dark MAGA’ forces in a continuing battle against his political foes.”
