The New Orleans Police Department is hiring civilians to assist with staffing issues and to free up more police officers to patrol the streets during a violent crime spike, according to Fox News.
“The goal is for our officers to feel safe, so they can make our citizens and visitors feel safe,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson stated on Thursday at a press conference.
Civilians will come on board as police intake specialists who will be tasked with monitoring phones at the department and replacing administrative police officers. The police department will also hire somewhere between 50 and 75 civilians who will actively respond to non-emergency calls that do not require a police officer to be present. Some of them will even be trained as detectives, according to WDSU.
“As we take calls over the phone, there may be some evidence that needs to be collected with that call. We’ll have civilian investigators to go out and collect that evidence instead of an officer having to go out there and collect that evidence,” Ferguson explained.

Incidents such as animals on the loose, medical calls, forgery calls, certain theft cases, and auto accidents that take place on private property will be handled by civilians, according to WDSU.
The murder rate in the Big Easy has jumped a whopping 141 percent since 2019. New Orleans overtook St. Louis, Missouri, as the murder capital of the country in September under Democratic leadership. There were 52 homicides per 100,000 residents as of Sept. 11. Murders have skyrocketed 78 percent this year, according to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission. Homicides are up 121 percent in 2022 compared to 2019.
Ferguson said during the briefing that civilians will strengthen the understaffed police force. The department lost 150 officers in 2021 alone. They are so desperate that they are now going after rejects to fill the ranks.
“My message to you — to those of you [who] may have been disqualified in the past, I’m urging you to resubmit your application because some of our hiring criteria has changed,” Ferguson announced, asserting that there have been some changes to the hiring process, including not allowing credit scores to affect whether a person is approved to come on board or not.

Before an individual can join the department, they will have to be trained and undergo a background check.
The plan is to put 75 additional officers on the streets and to reduce the average 11-minute response time to priority calls.
“This is also to reduce some of the workload currently placed on our patrol and district personnel but most importantly to reduce response times,” Ferguson commented.
“If we’re having that visibility, we’re hoping we’re able to deter further crime from occurring and that would be less that our investigators have to follow but it’s a balance,” he added.
“We will also be using our traffic and K9, as well as our reserve divisions. Those are units that are normally in a standby position, waiting to be called upon. That will not happen any longer. They will be in the field in some sort of deployment status,” Ferguson remarked.
The redeployment plan of officers went into effect on Sunday.
