A female road rage suspect in Colorado miraculously survived a train hitting the police SUV where she was handcuffed in the backseat after the arresting officer left the vehicle parked on railroad tracks.

Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, 20, was pulled over by Platteville Police in connection to a road-rage incident that occurred last week involving a gun and was detained on suspicion of felony menacing. The incident occurred at a railroad crossing after officers spotted her white pickup truck, according to the Daily Mail.

After they pulled her over, the suspect was ordered to get out of the vehicle and kneel while she was handcuffed by an officer. She was then placed in the backseat of the police vehicle while officers discussed the arrest. Somehow they did not recognize the threat to the vehicle on the tracks.

The Fort Lupton Police Department released bodycam footage of an officer chatting with the suspect as the SUV sat with a door open on the tracks. Suddenly they heard a railroad train horn and the officers saw its approaching lights as they were searching the suspect’s vehicle about five minutes and 25 seconds into the video.

“The 8 minute clip was edited by the Ft. Lupton PD. I’m told there are 21 hours of video from 9 different perspectives. We received this edited clip because the cost to get everything was at $700+. We had to reach an agreement for transparency. Police provided clip for free,” Jeremy Jojola of 9NEWS tweeted out on Friday.

“UPDATED: Here is the FULL 8 minute clip released by Fort Lupton Police. This clip has been edited and redacted by Ft. Lupton Police. This video comes to 9NEWS after I filed a records request. I’m told there are NINE officer videos (body cam/dash cam) totaling 21 hours of video,” he added.

Instead of quickly pulling the woman from the car to safety, the officers backed off and watched as the train horrifically plowed into the SUV with the suspect inside. The woman reportedly tried to get out of the car herself but the doors were locked.

“She saw it coming and could hear the horn,” Paul Wilkinson, the attorney for Rios-Gonzalez said. “She was trying to get the police officers’ attention, screaming at them. She tried unlocking the door. She had her hands behind her back and was frantically trying to unlock the door.”

An officer can be heard screaming, “Move your car, stay back!”

The train hit the car full speed sending it hurtling down the tracks with Rios-Gonzalez inside. How she survived the impact is inconceivable especially when the condition of the SUV was revealed.

“Officers cleared the suspect vehicle to determine if anyone else was in the vehicle,” the Fort Lupton Police Department said in a statement. “Within a matter of seconds, the Platteville’s police vehicle, which contained the female detainee, was struck by a northbound train. Fort Lupton Officers immediately summoned medical assistance and began life-sustaining measures.”

The mother-of-one lived through it but has nine broken ribs, a broken arm, a fractured sternum, and lost several teeth in the accident. She also has a back and a head injury, according to The Denver Post.

A lawsuit against the police for the endangerment of a suspect during the course of their duties and extreme negligence is quite conceivable considering what happened.

Rios-Gonzalez is in the hospital and will have a lengthy and painful recovery. “She is conscious and able to hold a conversation. She has been able to get up once and sit back down again,” her attorney remarked.

The officer who parked his patrol car on the train tracks that was hit has been placed on a leave of absence pending an investigation into the matter.

“The biggest question is why would you park on train tracks. it’s just negligence, gross negligence, and recklessness,” Wilkinson told Fox 31.
