Despite Biden declaring the pandemic over, Pelosi extends proxy voting

Much like Dr. Anthony Fauci has repeatedly tried to sell that attacks on him are attacks on The Science™, Democrats have conveyed that doing the people’s work and their staying in power are synonymous.

As such, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stood in solidarity with yet another reversal of President Joe Biden’s remarks by the White House communications team and as a champion of never-ending emergencies when she declared a continuation of unconstitutional proxy voting.

Following the initial party-line vote in May 2020 where Democrats adopted the rule allowing any representative to vote for up to 10 fellow congressmen who granted such proxy, Pelosi has continued to extend the measure that even at its inception was out of sync with how the rest of the country was responding to COVID.

Rather than seeing the expiration of the rule, the speaker announced Friday that she would conveniently extend the measure until after the election in a “Dear Colleague” letter that read, “In light of the attached notification by the Sergeant-at-Arms in consultation with the Office of Attending Physician, that a public health emergency is in effect due to a novel coronavirus, I am hereby extending the ‘covered period’ designated on January 4, 2021 pursuant to section 3(s) of House Resolution 8, until November 10, 2022.”

The note from Sergeant at Arms William Walker specified the consultation as Pelosi set forth and added only, “I write to provide you further notification that the public health emergency due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 remains in effect.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) who has practiced what he preaches in his outspoken objection to draconian COVID mandates reacted by pointing out how Pelosi’s unilateral move defied her own party’s messaging. “The big guy said ‘C’mon man, pandemic is over.’ Fully vaxxed can now get 5th shot. Nevertheless, Pelosi extends proxy voting due to ‘novel coronavirus’ until the week of the election.”

As set forth by the legislative schedule, following the last votes at 3 pm on September 30, the entirety of the month of October along with the first two weeks of November will be set aside for District Work. In other words, Congress has made no plans for votes so that politicians can focus on their election campaigns before the midterms.

Pelosi’s move to extend proxy voting ensures that should any votes need to be added to the calendar, most will be able to remain on the campaign trail as proxy representatives return to D.C.

“Earlier this week, President Biden claimed that the pandemic was over. It seems everyone but Speaker Pelosi agrees. By extending proxy voting, Speaker Pelosi continues to allow members to forgo the most important component of their job – voting – and lie to their constituents in the process,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) railed in a statement. “The day when Republicans take back the House and eliminate this unconstitutional and unethical practice can’t come soon enough.”

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy took a more sarcastic tact as he simply reacted, “So much COVID.”

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) took a moment in an op-ed for the New York Post promoting the Commitment to America that the path “to restore voters’ confidence in Congress, [starts] with ending Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s proxy-voting abuse of power that allowed 90% of House Democrats to get paid without needing to show up for work.”

An example of that abuse was presented earlier this year with the case of Rep. Kai Kahele (D-HI) who took advantage of the proxy voting scheme to maintain a job as a pilot flying “occasional flights” for Hawaiian Airlines.

Kahele’s office issued a statement claiming that “The Congressman’s outside employment is in accordance with rules set by the U.S. House Committee on Ethics,” that limited annual outside income to $29,895 in 2022.

However, as was demonstrated by Democrats throughout the pandemic, there is no such thing as a rule they promote that they aren’t ready to violate.
