“Big or small, we wreck them all.”
This seems the motto of regressive Democrat administrations when it comes to governing America’s once-peaceful cities.
North Carolina tourist town Asheville, population 92,328 in the 2020 census, is watching helplessly as violent crime spikes; up 31% in just the past 5 years.
Nestled in Duncombe County at the eastern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the trendy picturesque locale has for years drawn in artists, actors, and other regressive activists who apparently find the time to vote between their “tokes” and equity protests.
It seems, though, that painting, playing make-believe, and cooking delicious food doesn’t help to maintain a safe community.
“I think what you’re seeing in Asheville right now is a culmination of the last several years of pulling police back and not letting them do their jobs like they’re able to do,” former Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan told Fox News Digital in a recent phone interview.

Of course, just like in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles, regressive-run Asheville has generated its own massive homelessness problem. Despite the platitudes of the City, or perhaps because of them, the problem remains.
Asheville.gov shows how serious the administration is in actually fixing the problem:
“In the delivery of daily responses and long term solutions to homelessness, the City of Asheville embraces the following values:
- Homeless people are not the problem. Homelessness is the problem.
- Homelessness is a public health issue, an equity issue and a housing issue.
- Strategies and decisions should be data driven
- Homelessness is a solvable problem.
“These values inform the contributions the City makes to maintaining a safe community. However, City government cannot end homelessness alone. These values also provide a foundation for how the City approaches and develops partnerships to end homelessness,” the city website continued.
Embracing values… the regressive solution to nearly every problem it encounters has resulted in a 21% increase in homelessness since just last year, according to May figures, Fox News reported.
This may or may not be related to Asheville’s accompanying 11 homicides in 2022, on pace to exceed both 2020 and 2021. Then there’s the evidence of increased Mexican drug cartel activity, as “multiple law enforcement sources” told Fox News Digital.
“Both the Asheville Police Department (APD) and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department have been hemorrhaging officers in recent years, with many retiring early or simply quitting. APD made international headlines in June 2021 when they announced they would no longer respond in-person to 911 calls about theft, fraud or trespassing after losing a third of their force,” Fox News noted.
Former Duncombe County Sheriff Duncan “retired as sheriff and became politically unaffiliated in 2018,” the outlet added, “citing ‘an anti-law enforcement sentiment in the Democratic Party right now.’ He told Fox News Digital that police who do wrong must be held accountable, but also said officers both locally and around the country have become hesitant to do their jobs ‘because they can be right, but it can be the wrong set of facts, and they can still wind up in trouble.'”
Duncan further noted that when he was serving as county sheriff, “left-wing activists” from outside the community would sweep in to disrupt community meetings.
“They would really try to get into it with the police, and a lot of times, they would try to shout down things,” he said. “And the first people who quit coming to those meetings were the people within the community. They really didn’t get to speak, and they really didn’t get anything done.”
“Personally, I think that is the agenda of the Left: for law enforcement not to be able to do anything that’s effective and makes the community safer,” he added.
