Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), the leading candidate for mayor in Los Angeles, claims her home was broken into last week by a Hispanic man wearing a mask. What was taken? No jewelry, no cash, no electronics – even though all of those were out in the open. The burglar’s lucre was two guns, which were reportedly locked securely in a Brinks lockbox.
The antennae went up for “The Five” co-host Jeanine Pirro who wasn’t quite ready to convict the suspect, saying that “something is totally off here.”

Judge Jeanine began her tirade by pointing out that Bass had two guns, registered in her name yet without permits, which were as secure as guns could be, locked tight in Brinks security. Pirro also cast aspersions on the description of the suspect as Hispanic.
“They didn’t tell us how they got a description, since no one was at home,” she said.
More to the point, the judge expressed doubts that the burglar would remove a box from the home, the contents of which he could not be expected to divine.
“How does a criminal not take cash? There’s no identification number, no fingerprints. Not take jewelry. Not take anything other than a box that you hope two guns are in… I’ll tell you what, all my antennas are up here. There’s something totally off. No criminal goes in and doesn’t take cash.”
Clearly, it is the timing that causes a skeptic to skepticize.
Bass said she bought the guns years ago (Pirro said 40 years ago) for personal protection. Perhaps not coincidentally, she is running on a platform of reducing violent crime in Los Angeles, which is up significantly since 2020. Shootings, for instance, are up 69% in LA over the last two years.
The robbery comes after being asked in March whether she felt safe walking around Los Angeles.
“I do feel safe – I would say a 10 – I do feel safe,” the California congresswoman said. Perhaps she felt that was a misstep in retrospect, considering the stance she was taking against rising crime in LA. Can a person feel 100% safe and claim at the same time that her constituents do not feel safe? The burglary could make for a convenient pivot point. It could prove problematic if she were to let her opponent own the crime issue.
Bass’s opponent is billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who is probably a tad too sensible to win in Los Angeles. Perhaps voters remember that he was once a Republican. He abandoned the party ten years ago but couldn’t, at that time, bring himself to join the Democratic Party, choosing to have no party affiliation. When he decided to run earlier this year, he officially became a Democrat. It was an obvious choice if he wanted any chance of winning at all.
“What kind of Democrat will I be? I won’t be a typical Democrat, that’s for sure,” said Caruso back in January. “I will be a pro-centrist, pro-jobs, pro-public safety Democrat.” He provided details on his platform in a letter that he shared on Twitter.

Bass leads Caruso by 12 points in a recent poll.
Los Angeles residents may be aware that New York City Mayor Eric Adams is another Democrat, a former cop even, who took a tough stance on crime during his campaign last year. In office since Jan 1, Adams has fallen in line with the new Democrat norm for mayors, prosecutors and DAs, with their no-cash bail and lack of zeal for prosecuting violent criminals.
