‘Scumbag of the week’ Father and son duo arrested for stomping wedding guest almost to death

A father and son who tag-teamed a man who was brutally beaten and stomped at a Florida wedding last weekend were arrested and charged with aggravated battery for the incident that left the victim with extensive facial damage and clinging to life after they left him for dead.

Joel O’Grady, 38, and 21-year-old Julian Falkinburg, both of Sanford, Fla., were arrested on Friday and booked into Volusia County jail for their savage assault on 36-year-old Tyler Kaltenbach at the Granville Farms wedding venue in Lake Helen on Saturday, September 3, a beating so severe that the duo was ripped as “scumbags” by the sheriff.

Police responded to a 911 call from guests at the venue which describes itself as a “dream destination for couples who seek both tranquil beauty and luxurious comfort on their special day,” where they found the bloodied victim in the parking lot

“Deputies were called to the scene in which three men engaged in a fight in the parking lot. The victim was struck in the head and face multiple times and kicked even after becoming unresponsive. The two suspects fled the scene before deputies arrived,” a press release from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reads. “O’Grady and Falkinburg have extensive violent criminal histories.”

Sheriff Mike Chitwood described the attack on Kaltenbach, “This isn’t like a punch, this is the guy goes down and then you stomp on him until he’s unconscious, this could have very easily been a murder, somebody could have ended up with significant brain damage, we’ve seen these things happen all the time.”

Kaltenbach was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, both alleged assailants fled the scene and were on the run until they were taken into custody.

Sheriff Chitwood announced the arrests on Facebook, “This has to be our first father and son SCUMBAG OF THE WEEK post, but they earned it…”

“O’Grady posted $100,000 bond and was released overnight, while Falkinburg posted $50,000 bond and was released Saturday afternoon. Conditions of their release include no contact with the victim,” Chitwood wrote on Facebook,

It remains unclear what occurred that led to the violent incident between the men who knew each other.

Kaltenbach faces a long road to recovery from the injuries inflicted upon him during the attack including facial reconstructive surgery to repair a broken cheekbone.

“Dental work is going to be extensive. All of his upper teeth were kicked out. Many of his lower teeth,” said Sara Howeller, the attorney who is representing the family.

“That is beyond disrespectful to the bride and groom, and to keep kicking someone when they are unconscious is proof they have no compassion. When they are caught, they need to take ‘mandatory’ classes of some sort that include ‘ Ten ways to restore their human dignity’,” commented one user on Facebook,

“Looks like they’ve already been to jail before and want to make a career out of it,” wrote another.
