‘Flatten the curve’ slogan gets a reboot — to announce energy rationing policy

A familiar phrase has been rebooted for the crisis du jour when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would be mandating reduced electricity usage by citizens governed by unelected political elite bureaucrats, telling her subjects that it would be necessary to “flatten the curve” to reduce demands during peak usage periods.

Europe and especially Germany, where frau von der Leyen hails from, is gripped in a worsening energy crisis, the result of the perfect storm of the ongoing war in Ukraine and short-sighted clean energy policies, and since it worked so well during the early days of the COVID pandemic, the slogan has been repurposed for the next round of government oppression.

A clip of von der Leyen’s comments from a press conference where she discussed her energy plan has gone viral on social media as the boot once again comes down squarely on the necks of beleaguered Europeans.

“So what we have to do is flatten the curve and avoid the peak demands,” she said. “We will propose a mandatory target for reducing electricity use at peak hours. And we will work very closely with the member states to achieve this.”

To call her use of the “flatten the curve” – which as recent history has shown, was the initially reasonable explanation for a brief lockdown that was then extended by authoritarian politicians who saw a golden opportunity to imbue themselves with unprecedented new powers – was controversial would be a huge understatement and Twitter exploded with reactions, the vast majority of them negative.

Fox News ratings king Tucker Carlson also weighed in on the resurrection of “flatten the curve” and Europe’s largely self-inflicted troubles.

“Now, you’d think a normal leader would say, if you ran a state, for example, or you’re president of a country, you would say, ‘I can’t keep the power on. I’m sorry. That was, like, a fundamental part of the bargain I made with you, the people who voted for me, when you did vote for me, that I would keep the lights on.’ But they never apologize. They blame you…,” he said.

“So you, remember back to COVID, when the leaders of the world told us that our natural rights, the ones we were born with, were going to have to be suspended, we had to do this to ‘flatten the curve.’ It’s been the refrain for the past years during the COVID pandemic, which was totally real,” Carlson continued.

“Well, this week we heard the phrase again. Leaders in Europe are bringing back the phrase ‘flatten the curve,’ but this time they’re not talking about COVID and that should awaken you to something. Maybe something bigger is going on here. Here’s the president of the European Commission, announcing that once again, we must flatten the curve, but not for COVID,” Carlson added, before showing a clip of von der Leyen’s remarks.

“Oh, so we have to flatten the curve because you screwed up and we don’t have enough energy now. How long before the climate lockdowns?” Carlson asked. “Let’s say that again. How long before the climate lockdowns? Laugh? Well, it wasn’t that long ago that Europeans laughed at the idea that they might run out of energy someday. Now they’re turning off the stoplights to avoid blackouts.”

Some dared to suggest that the COVID playbook would be similarly used to usher in climate totalitarianism and they were dismissed as conspiracy theorists only to now see their predictions come true, take it straight from the horse’s mouth.
