Police release chilling bodycam video of Florida shooting that left two brothers dead

Police have released chilling bodycam footage of an incident in Orlando, Florida that left two brothers dead after officers responded to a shooting at a local hotel, a video that does little to quell criticism that the deputy may have overreacted to the situation.

On Friday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office released the video showing the moments after police arrived at the scene at the Heritage Hotel at 7900 South Orange Blossom Trail on August 6 where they found 21-year-old Dylan Jimenez bleeding out after being shot in a gunfight with another man and his distraught older brother standing nearby.

As first responders attended to Jimenez, his brother, 28-year-old Bryan Richardson was standing outside of the crowd and holding a handgun at his side, prompting a bystander to yell “he has a gun,” resulting in a deputy pulling his service weapon and pointing it at Richardson as his partner went to disarm him.

The deputy then discharged his weapon multiple times, hitting Richardson who did not appear to be violent during the fatal encounter.

“We think it’s important for members of our community to view the entirety of what is released, rather than rely on short snippets in the media,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.

“On August 6, 2022, around 12:30 pm the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received reports of shots fired at the Heritage Hotel on South Orange Blossom Trail,” Orange County Sheriff John Mina said. “Two people had been shot before deputies arrived. When deputies arrived on scene, they encountered a man – later identified as Dylan Jimenez – with a gunshot wound. As they approached him to render medical aid, deputies were alerted to another man nearby who was holding a gun.”

“Deputies directed that man – later identified as Bryan Richardson – to drop the gun,” he continued. “When he did not comply, one deputy fired his weapon. No deputies were injured in the shooting. All three people who were shot were taken to the hospital. Dylan Jimenez and Bryan Richardson died from their injuries. The third person survived. The deputy who fired his weapon was placed on paid, temporary administrative leave.”

Ada Baker, the mother of the two brothers hired an attorney who said “Richardson was holding the gun because he was worried the person who initially shot his brother was still out there and claims Richardson told a deputy he had a weapon,” according to Fox 35 Orlando.

“By all accounts, Bryan Richardson was providing protection to the deputy and those providing aid to his dying brother,” the attorney Mark NeJame said in a statement to the outlet, “adding that there was a lack of communication between the deputy and Richardson.”

“We are investigating as to why there was an apparent lack of communication between the Deputies and if the killing of Ada Blaker’s second son was avoidable if the deputies had communicated according to policy,” the attorney said.

Dr. David Thomas, a retired police officer and professor of forensic studies at Florida Gulf Coast University tells told Fox 35 Orlando “that it’s possible the deputy who fired the shots might have not seen his partner disarm Richardson.”

“People think there is a light switch that turns off, but the brain can’t react that quickly,” he said. “There’s a concept called reaction time, and it takes 2.5 seconds for the brain to register that the threat is no longer there.”

“It is our policy to release body-worn camera video within 30 days of a critical incident, including deputy-involved shootings. All deputy involved shooting incidents are independently investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The findings are then turned over to the State Attorney’s Office for review,” Sheriff Mina said. “Once that process is complete, an internal investigation is done to determine whether any Sheriff’s office policies or procedures were violated.”
