AOC in no rush after violating congressional financial disclosure rules; suspected reason quite rich

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has reportedly violated, at least technically, federal campaign financial disclosure rules again, but her team insists there is nothing to see here.

“Ocasio-Cortez was due to report her 2021 finances to the House Ethics Committee 11 days ago on Aug. 13. However, the public remains in the dark as to the status of Ocasio-Cortez’s finances as of Wednesday morning, and a spokeswoman for the New York lawmaker said Ocasio-Cortez feels no rush to file her disclosure as required by federal law because she can wait another 20 days before risking a fine,” the Washington Examiner reported on Wednesday.

Radical squad stalwart AOC, whom Democrat propagandist Stephen Colbert seems to think is a viable presidential candidate, although she might want to brush up on civics first, was apparently tardy with the required paperwork in 2020, barely avoiding the nominal $200 fine assessed by the House Ethics Committee.

“[T]he Committee provides a 30-day grace period before fines are levied. The Congresswoman plans to file before the period expires,” a spokeswoman told the news outlet.

According to the calendar year 2021 filing instructions, the official deadline appeared to be May 16, 2022, subject to a reasonable extension of up to 90 days, so Ocasio-Cortez is already getting quite a bit of extra time to complete the documentation.

Upon submission, the U.S. House website posts each lawmaker’s annual financial disclosure submissions for public review. To date, only a handful of members have failed to comply. According to the Clerk of the House, “Financial Disclosure Reports include information about the source, type, amount, or value of the incomes of Members,” candidates, and certain others.

Attorney Paul Kamenar, who represents the National Legal and Policy Center, “suggested that Ocasio-Cortez could be delayed in filing her 2021 disclosure because of alleged ethical issues surrounding her appearance at the Met Gala in September 2021, during which she wore a designer dress that featured the phrase ‘Tax The Rich,” the Examiner added.

The NLPC, as well as another watchdog organization, filed an ethics complaint in connection with that event over potential improper gifts, including the dress, that AOC might have received.

“Not only is she an admitted scofflaw, she’s a repeat offender. One must wonder whether she also files her income tax returns past the deadlines,” Kamenar asserted. “Just like AOC did in 2020 when she filed her 2019 disclosure report 30 days late after the 90-day extension, she’s at it again, blowing off the deadline for filing her 2021 filing that was due on August 13.”

Parenthetically, many individuals and businesses often seek a filing extension for their income tax returns for good reasons, such as late-arriving documents, but not all of them have the extensive staff support that Ocasio-Cortez or other federal election officials enjoy.

Most people aren’t federal politicians, either, for that matter, with all the potential conflicts of interest that go along with that status.

Ocasio-Cortez faced no opposition in Tuesday’s New York primary. In November, she will face GOP America First rival Tina Forte but is likely to cruise to victory in the blue enclave.

“Ocasio-Cortez said in April that American democracy is undermined when lawmakers are merely perceived to have acted improperly in regard to their personal finances…Ocasio-Cortez’s cavalier attitude toward disclosing her own finances to the public runs counter to her prior statements in regard to her colleague’s finances,” the Examiner claimed, especially when it comes to Wall Street investing.

Ocasio-Cortez is someone whom Tucker Carlson often refers to as “Sandy Cortez, from Westchester,” as a way to call attention to the upscale suburban neighborhood where she grew up in contrast to the working-class Bronx-area district that she purportedly represents.
