Petty? Liz Cheney releases audio of concession call to opponent to prove it wasn’t actually 2-seconds

Audio has emerged that suggests that U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney called her opponent in the GOP primary to concede, contrary to what winner Harriet Hageman told Sean Hannity. Whether the call actually got through is another matter.

It’s difficult to know how reliable cell phone service is in Wyoming, or anywhere else for that matter, at a particular time, however.

According to a voicemail shared on social media by Politico reporter Olivia Beavers, future CNN or MNSBC employee Cheney matter-of-factly left the following message for the decisive victor of the GOP congressional primary: “Hi Harriet, Liz Cheney calling. It’s about 8:13 on Tuesday the 16th. I’m calling to concede the election and to congratulate you on the win. Thanks. Bye-bye.”

In an appearance on the Fox News Channel in the video clip embedded above, Hageman had told host Sean Hannity on Wednesday evening that she only heard two words from Cheney.

“Well, there wasn’t a phone call. While I was going in and getting ready to do my acceptance speech last night and had just arrived at the watch party, she called and left a very brief two-second message on my cellphone. That’s the extent of it. I haven’t had any other contact with Liz Cheney. She only made one effort, and all she said was, ‘Hello, Harriet.’ And then that was the end of it. So she didn’t call and discuss with me any kind of concession or anything else. It was just the one phone call. I was obviously extremely busy with family and friends.”

In response to a follow-up question from Hannity, Hageman added that “That was the end of the call, yes. That was the only time. It was about 8:15 last night, and I was just getting ready to go on stage with my acceptance speech, and I didn’t have an opportunity to visit with her.”

Cheney told Beavers that she left a “clear and direct” voicemail after repeated attempts to reach Hageman.

In a follow-up tweet, Beavers suggested that the Hageman campaign has receipts, with the reporter noting that “perhaps technical/cell service issues” were indeed in play as alluded to above:

The telephone tag is just a mere footnote. It’s interesting, perhaps, only to the extent that the concession was very routine rather than something dramatic that people might expect after these contentious political contests. To that extent, it’s a voyeuristic letdown.

In terms of who didn’t get the message, however, the larger issue is that Cheney, who lives mostly in northern Virginia, seemed totally disconnected from the Wyoming electorate who wanted her to represent the state instead of advocating for the neocon, Never Trump cohort or becoming a Nancy Pelosi pawn on the J6 committee.

Wyoming has just one, at-large, congressional district.

Hageman crushed Cheney in a massive landslide and is a lock to win the general election in the sold red state. Cheney received less than 30 percent of the vote. The magnitude of the loss would have been even greater except that Wyoming is an open-primary state that allows crossover votes from Democrats.

Hageman told Hannity that Wyoming voters “have made it clear that they believe they’re entitled to a representative in Congress that represents their interests and doesn’t intend to pursue a one-woman war against Donald Trump. We didn’t send her to Washington, D.C., to be the judge and jury of Donald Trump. We sent her to Washington, D.C., to block the radical Biden agenda, to block the radical Pelosi agenda, and she signed on with both of them.”

In addition to potential cable news gigs, Cheney is supposedly considering her own most-assuredly doomed bid for the presidency in 2024 either as a Republican or an independent.

On Wednesday evening, Hannity’s Fox News colleague Tucker Carlson satirically observed that “Liz Cheney is America’s foremost ‘defender of democracy,’ but democracy spanked her hard last night.”
