Pastor offers groveling apology after scolding ‘cheap’ flock: ‘I’m not worth your Red Lobster money?’

A Kansas City pastor chastised his “cheap” congregation for not gifting him an expensive watch during a sermon on “taking care of God’s shepherd” and then issued a groveling apology after a video of it went viral.

Pastor Carlton Funderburke called his congregation “poor, broke, busted, and disgusted” during the sermon after berating them for not getting him a Movado watch he has wanted for a year. The watch ranges in price between $395 to $3,295.

“I’m not worth your McDonald’s money? I’m not worth your Red Lobster money?” he dramatically and outrageously asked the Church at the Well congregation on August 7. “I ain’t worth your St. John Knits – y’all can’t afford it no how.”

“I ain’t worth your Louis Vuitton? I ain’t worth your Prada? I’m not worth your Gucci?” he continued in the self-serving demand for the watch.

The so-called pastor went on to inform congregants about “what God is saying” before castigating them once more, stating, “Ooh, you can buy a Movado [watch] at Sam’s [Club] and you know I asked for one last year. And here it is all the way in August and I still ain’t got it. Let me kick down the door and talk to my cheap sons and daughters.”

His selfish rant was reportedly recorded and shared on a TikTok page called Kanascitydefender. The caption of the footage read, “Kansas City Pastor GOES OFF on congregation calling them ‘poor, broke busted and disgusted’ because they didn’t give him enough money to buy a new watch he’s been wanting. It’s pastors like these that give the church a bad name smh an also why a lot of our generation left the church. What y’all think? 🤔”

Once the video of the outlandish sermon went viral, Funderburke sent out an apology, asserting that the “video clip does not reflect my heart or my sentiment toward God’s people, yet, that’s not discernible in the clip.”

Because what he said was indefensible, the pastor did not bother to offer an explanation for his actions.

“Therefore, I offer this sincere apology to you today,” he said reading from a prepared script. “No context could erase the words I used. I apologize to all the people that have been hurt or angered or anyway damaged by my words.”

The pastor then apologized to his congregation for not showing them “respect” or “love,” and for the scrutiny brought upon other pastors due to his actions.

“For those who know and love me, thank you for your support,” he stated. “For those who now know me because of this video clip, I regret that your first impression of me is one of anger, hate, and resentment.”
