After new CDC guidelines, doctors call for immediate halt to discriminatory policies against unvaccinated

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issuance of new guidance has further emphasized the widely known discrimination that has been at play since the vaccine rollout began but Drs. Jay Bhattacharya and Nicole Saphier say this subtle admission is a long way from course correction to restoring the faith of the public.

Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor of medicine, joined “Fox & Friends First” co-host Carley Shimkus on Monday to discuss what the change in guidance means. As presented, the new direction from the CDC recognizes natural immunity, eliminates testing and quarantine requirements, and does away with absurd social distancing recommendations.

“Rather than focusing on suppressing the spread of the disease, which hasn’t worked and has been tremendously harmful,” Bhattacharya said of the update, “it’s now coming to reality and saying, ‘well let’s use the tools we have and protect the vulnerable.'”

When asked about dropping a distinction between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, he noted in no uncertain terms, “In effect, the CDC encouraged discrimination against unvaccinated people and companies just responded.”

This brought the doctor to bring up tennis champion and current number one player Novak Djokovic who has been barred entry from the United States and, unless a change is made, will be prohibited from competing in the fourth and final major of the year at the U.S. Open.

“We had this advisory turned into essentially a law that said you couldn’t come into the United States if you were an unvaccinated foreigner,” he said before adding, “Many, many people have relatives abroad who couldn’t come into the U.S., who’ve been separated from their family because of this guidance. Now what needs to happen is every single one of these policies that discriminates against the unvaccinated needs to change. It needs to change immediately. Novak Djokovic should play in the U.S. Open for instance.”

Saphier shared in Bhattacharya’s assessment when she joined “Fox & Friends” co-host Ainsley Earhardt later Monday morning and said, “These vaccine mandates, even mask mandates at this point, they’re all culture-driven, it’s not data-driven, and the United States remains in the global minority when it comes to these global entry requirements of having to show proof of vaccination to enter the country.”

“You can be actively infected, have COVID, spread it to other people–but as long as you show proof of vaccination–come on right in,” she explained of the way the current travel requirements are laid out. From there, the doctor highlighted the unscientific nature of the CDC changing their domestic guidance without simultaneously updating the travel requirements by presenting the tennis star’s personal case.

“Djokovic actually had COVID end of 2021. The majority of Americans got their vaccine early 2021. So,” Saphier argued, “his immunity is probably stronger than the majority of people who’ve already been vaccinated against COVID, and the fact that he is a 35-year-old healthy male, that, having that COVID infection has already just decreased his already nominal risk of COVID just a little bit more.”

“Will the CDC update their travel entry requirements? I mean they should if they want to stay consistent with themselves, but I’ve lost a lot of faith with this public health entity so I’m not sure,” she went on.

Bhattacharya spoke to the same when asked if these new guidelines were a way of the CDC admitting they were wrong all along.

“That’s exactly what they did with this guidance. They’re admitting that they’re wrong without saying that they were wrong…It’s underhanded for sure. It’s a welcome development…but it would be really nice if they would make a bigger deal about the fact that they made mistakes. It would actually restore trust in the public health agencies,” Bhattacharya said.

Saphier went on to suggest an appropriate correction was likely not going to come in a timely manner stating, “I don’t have faith that they’re actually going to move in an efficient manner because…they haven’t done that with anything,” as throughout the pandemic border crossers have entered the country illegally without having to face any of the scrutiny that a professional athlete like Djokovic has.

In conclusion, she said, “It’s time to move forward.”
