Florida sheriff says school officers will have tactical gear, rifles: ‘Our children, teachers will be protected at all costs!’

While Democratic leaders have resorted to eroding the rights of law-abiding citizens to supposedly confront the dangers of violent offenders, first responders are making genuine change at the local level and vowing “children and teachers will be protected at all costs!”

In the wake of the Robb Elementary School tragedy in Uvalde, Texas where 19 children and two teachers were murdered, lawmakers pounced on the opportunity to ram through gun legislation that failed to address the root causes of the massacre. Additionally, investigations remain ongoing into the hesitant response from local law enforcement to combat the threat head-on.

As such, Florida’s Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced Tuesday that going forward, the schools in his area would become “hard targets” with the introduction of “tactical preparedness” for school resource deputies.

The sheriff made the announcement through a video posted to Facebook where he appeared beside a paraphrased quote widely attributed to Sun Tzu beside him that read, “Every Battle Is Won Or Lost Before It Is Ever Fought!!”

“In the coming weeks, the school resource deputies for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will transition to a new style uniform and level of preparedness that goes even further to help keep our children safe,” he explained making specific mention of Uvalde. “A tactical appearance that clearly signifies we mean business when it comes to protecting our children and a tactical advantage that gives our team the ability to instantly address an active shooter who might be on our campus with a rifle.”

“Our children and teachers will be protected at all costs!” the quote beside Ivey later read.

“You are not coming into our schools and killing our children,” he continued. “I firmly believe that if you do not meet violence with violence you will be violently killed.”

Ivey’s position is not a newly formed take on law enforcement’s role in the community as he had previously responded to criticism of a shootout between officers and a career criminal who died after incurring multiple gunshot wounds by stating, “Let there be no doubt, this individual got exactly what he deserved. And to those out there that might be foolish enough to ask why we shot him so many times, that answer is simple: evil can never be dead enough.”

The sheriff went on to explain how prior to the change, a school resource officer had to exit the building to remove their rifle from the safe in their vehicle before they could address a threat like the one posed in Texas, wasting precious time.

“This new style uniform and tactical preparedness gives our team members the advantage and ability to instantly address the threat with the level of force necessary to eliminate the shooter and save the lives of innocent teachers and children,” Ivey explained.

North Carolina’s Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood recently took similar measures to Ivey’s heading into the new school year, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“We were able to put an AR-15 rifle and safe in all of our schools in the county. We’ve also got breaching tools to go into those safes. We’ve got extra magazines with ammo in those safes,” he explained of a stripped-down version of Ivey’s approach.

The Brevard County Sheriff has faced criticism over the optics of his defensive measures with some saying it makes the school look like an Israeli airport. To those detractors, Ivey stated, “When’s the last time you heard about someone shooting up an Israeli airport? You haven’t. And the reason for that is that they’re better prepared.”

“Our team is standing guard at the door to keep evil away,” he concluded.
